You can add chapters to a YouTube lecture archive by editing its description in YouTube Studio and adding timestamp-and-title lines. Start at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and leave at least 10 seconds between chapters. First, however, make sure YouTube actually created an editable archive: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Before adding chapters, confirm the archive exists
Chapter entries are added to a video description; they cannot restore a recording that was never captured. Open YouTube Studio and check that the stream appears as a video you can edit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: archive live streams.
For an uninterrupted 24/7 channel, plan how to preserve recordings rather than relying on one continuous YouTube archive. Segmenting or recording locally is an operational safeguard, not a YouTube chapter requirement. YouTube does not expressly guarantee that every 24/7 archive—especially one longer than 12 hours—will be created or expose the same editing controls as an ordinary video. Verify the archive and its editability before depending on it.
Check the backup while the stream is running
If you are recording locally, confirm the archive file is growing and monitor audio and video during the stream. YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends checking the local archive and stream quality during operation, rather than waiting until the event ends. YouTube Help: live streaming tips.

Add manual chapters in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and select Content.

Find the lecture archive and open its details. If it is missing or you cannot edit it, resolve the archive issue first; description timestamps cannot recover uncaptured footage.

In the description field, add one timestamp and a concise topic title per line. Start at
00:00. For a recording longer than an hour, use an hour-based timestamp such as1:05:30. -
Check the list: it must contain at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Give the first timestamp the opening topic’s title. For a lecture without obvious section breaks, use meaningful transitions such as a new subject, demonstration, question period, or break.

Save the video, then open the public watch page and check that the chapter divisions appear and lead to the intended moments. If they do not, recheck the timestamp format, order, count, and spacing.

Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

You can allow automatic chapters in the video’s settings in Studio, but for a lecture where viewers need dependable topic labels, use manual timestamps and verify the result. Eligibility and controls can vary by video; YouTube’s general chapter guidance does not settle every case for an unusually long 24/7 archive. YouTube Help: video chapters.
Use live markers and transcripts as planning aids
A live-stream marker can help you find a moment later: YouTube says markers appear on the timeline when you create a highlight in YouTube Editor. The cited guidance describes them as aids for highlight editing, not as automatic entries in the video description. After the stream, turn the moments you want viewers to navigate to into timestamp-and-title lines yourself. YouTube Help: create a highlight.
YouTube notes that chapters may appear in transcripts. A transcript can help you spot topic changes and estimate where they occur, but it does not automatically supply the manual chapter timestamps. Use the description workflow above to publish the chapters. YouTube Help: transcripts.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect chapters

No archive appears: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns it may not capture streams beyond that duration; use a local backup and verify recordings during future broadcasts.

Chapter divisions do not show: Confirm the first entry is
00:00, there are at least three entries, timestamps ascend, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Save the description and recheck the watch page. -
Automatic chapters are absent: Automatic chapters are not guaranteed. Check the video’s eligibility and use manual timestamps when available.

A live marker does not appear as a chapter: Use it to locate the moment in the editor, then add a timestamp and title to the description. The marker itself is not documented as generating a description chapter.

The archive is present but chapter controls are unavailable: YouTube’s public chapter instructions describe videos generally and do not specifically guarantee identical editing for every 24/7 archive. Confirm that the archive is editable in Studio; preserve a local recording so the lecture is not dependent on that archive.
