Get your key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter it in Streamlabs Desktop’s YouTube destination—or in its separate server and stream-key fields—and start the encoder. Confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s preview before you go live. YouTube documents this connection workflow, but its available guidance does not confirm the current names or location of Streamlabs Desktop’s controls, so the exact labels may vary by version.
Before you start: enable YouTube live streaming
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Find and copy the stream key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the existing stream you intend to use.
- Copy its stream key. YouTube may preload the settings from a previous stream, including its existing key; if the correct key is already selected, you usually do not need to replace it. Follow YouTube’s stream settings instructions if you need help locating or managing the key.
Enter the key in Streamlabs Desktop
In Streamlabs Desktop, open the streaming or encoder settings and choose the YouTube destination if one is offered. Paste the copied value into the stream-key field, then save or apply the settings. YouTube identifies Streamlabs as a verified live encoder, but its instructions do not establish the current Streamlabs Desktop menu path or exact control labels.
If the app does not offer a YouTube destination, use the manual server/key setup instead: copy the server URL shown in YouTube’s stream settings into the encoder’s server or RTMP field, and paste the key into the separate Stream Key field. Do not put the key in the server field or combine the two values.

Start the encoder and confirm the YouTube feed
- Save or apply the encoder settings, then start streaming from Streamlabs Desktop.
- Return to YouTube Live Control Room and check that the preview receives video and audio.
- If the event is scheduled or YouTube requires a manual start, click Go live in Live Control Room only after confirming the incoming feed and preview.
- Check that the picture moves and that representative audio is audible. During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages for problems.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring its messages during the stream. A static preview alone does not confirm that moving video and sound are reaching viewers. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Protect your stream key
Treat the key as a secret: YouTube describes it as similar to a stream’s password and address. Do not share it or show it on screen. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room; after resetting it, copy the new key into Streamlabs Desktop before trying to stream again. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.

Troubleshoot a missing feed or failed start
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Confirm that Streamlabs is running, that you selected the intended YouTube stream, and that its key is entered in the key field. If using manual setup, check the server URL and key separately.
- The encoder reports a start error: Retrieve the current key again from YouTube Studio and paste it into the encoder. This is YouTube’s recommended first step for third-party encoder start errors.
- The key was reset or may be exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update Streamlabs with the replacement key. The old key will no longer be the one to use.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check that live streaming has been enabled and that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements; initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The preview appears but the stream is not ready for viewers: Check moving video, audio, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If YouTube requires a manual start for the selected event, use Go live in Live Control Room after the feed is ready.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than a broadcast from Streamlabs Desktop, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams your uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
