You usually don’t add a YouTube stream key to Streamlabs Talk Studio’s native YouTube destination. Instead, connect your YouTube account: in Talk Studio, select Go Live > Add Destination > YouTube, sign in, and grant access. A stream key is for an encoder or a custom RTMP destination, not the standard YouTube account-linking flow.
Connect YouTube to Talk Studio
- Check that YouTube live streaming is enabled for your channel. Streamlabs says channel verification should be completed ahead of time and that activation can take up to 24 hours. Eligibility and interface requirements can change, so check YouTube Studio if live streaming or the destination is unavailable. Streamlabs’ browser-streaming guide, last updated March 5, 2025, describes this preparation.
- Sign in to Talk Studio. If you plan to use a camera or microphone, allow the browser to access those devices; that permission is for browser-based capture, not for entering a stream key.
- Choose Go Live > Add Destination > YouTube. Alternatively, open Profile Picture > Account Settings > Destinations > Add Destination, then choose YouTube and follow the prompts. Talk Studio Getting Started describes the account-settings route.
- Sign in to the YouTube account for the channel you want and grant Talk Studio access.
- On the Stream To screen, select YouTube and choose a privacy setting: Public, Private, or Unlisted. Public streams are broadly viewable; private streams are limited to invited people; unlisted streams do not appear in search or recommendations but can be shared by link.
- Select Next, enter the stream title and description, choose a category, then click Go Live.
The native destination connects through YouTube account authorization, so you should not expect a stream-key field in this flow.
When you do need a YouTube stream key
Use a key when configuring an external encoder or a custom RTMP destination. YouTube’s encoder instructions direct creators to the Live Control Room to create or select a stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Follow the preview and go-live steps for the stream type you selected.
Streamlabs’ stream-key guide describes finding or resetting the key from YouTube Studio’s Go Live flow under the “Streaming software” setup. That guide was last updated June 16, 2022; if its labels differ from the current YouTube interface, follow YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance.

- Treat the stream key like a password: enter it only in the intended encoder or destination, and do not expose it in screenshots or messages.
- For an external encoder, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server/URL field and the key in the stream-key field.
- For Talk Studio’s native YouTube destination, connect the account instead of pasting the key.
Add a custom RTMP destination in Talk Studio
Use custom RTMP when the destination is a platform Talk Studio does not support natively and that platform provides an ingest URL and stream key. Streamlabs documents this route in its Talk Studio Streaming Destinations guide.
- Open Profile Picture > Account Settings > Destinations > Add Destination.
- Choose Add Custom RTMP.
- Enter a destination name, the platform’s RTMP ingest URL, and the stream key supplied by that platform.
- Save the destination and select it when setting up the stream.
Do not choose custom RTMP just to reach YouTube if YouTube is available in Talk Studio’s native destination list.

Troubleshooting
There is no stream-key field for YouTube
That is expected in the native YouTube flow. Select YouTube, sign in, and authorize Talk Studio. If you are configuring a separate encoder, retrieve the key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder settings.
YouTube is missing or the channel cannot go live
Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and setup in YouTube Studio. Streamlabs’ guide says initial activation may take up to 24 hours after verification; this is an operational estimate from that guide, not a guaranteed activation time. If access remains unavailable, review YouTube’s current channel requirements.

You need to connect a platform that is not listed
Confirm that the platform provides an RTMP ingest URL and stream key, then use Add Custom RTMP. A key by itself is not enough; the destination also needs the correct server URL.
The stream is live to the wrong audience
Before going live, check the privacy selection on Talk Studio’s Stream To screen. Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted according to who should be able to watch.
