To put your webcam over gameplay, a presentation, or another video on YouTube Live, build the scene in OBS Studio: add the camera as a Video Capture Source, position and resize it, and layer it above the content source. Connect OBS to YouTube’s encoder workflow, check the Live Control Room preview, then start the broadcast. YouTube’s direct webcam route is simpler, but an encoder is the route for a composed scene with a movable picture-in-picture.
Choose the right YouTube streaming route
| Route | Best for | What you can control |
|---|---|---|
| OBS encoder workflow | A webcam overlay on gameplay, a presentation, screen content, or another source | Layer sources and position and resize the webcam in a composed scene. |
| YouTube webcam workflow | A straightforward camera broadcast from a computer | A simpler direct webcam broadcast; YouTube also documents screen sharing. |
YouTube Help describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays and use hardware such as microphones and cameras (YouTube live streaming tips). If the camera needs to sit above another source as a movable, resizable picture-in-picture, use OBS or another encoder rather than relying on the direct webcam route (YouTube webcam streaming).
Set up the webcam overlay in OBS Studio
- Enable live streaming before your event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete this ahead of time (YouTube encoder setup).
- Choose or create an OBS scene. Open OBS and select a scene for the broadcast. A scene is the layout of sources you send to the stream—for example, gameplay or a presentation with a camera on top (OBS Sources Guide; OBS Quick Start Guide).
- Add the camera source. In the Sources dock, click the add button, choose Video Capture Device (also described as a Video Capture Source), and select the webcam in its properties. OBS’s webcam guide describes adding the camera this way (OBS webcam FAQ).
- Put the webcam in front. In the Sources list, move the webcam above the gameplay, display-capture, or other video source. Higher sources render over lower ones (OBS Sources Guide).
- Size and position the overlay. Select the webcam in the preview and drag it to a corner or edge where it does not hide important details. Resize it using the source’s on-screen handles. Check both the camera framing and the content behind it.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up an encoder stream. If OBS offers YouTube as a service, select it and follow the connection prompts; otherwise copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings (YouTube encoder setup). Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or display it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming video to appear in the Live Control Room. Confirm the correct webcam is visible, the overlay is in the intended place, and it does not cover key information. OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes before a first stream or recording (OBS Quick Start Guide).
- Start and monitor the YouTube broadcast. When the preview is ready, use the Live Control Room to go live. Keep an eye on the video and audio during the broadcast (YouTube encoder setup).
Check upload bandwidth before going live
Your internet connection must have enough upload capacity for the full stream bitrate, not just the webcam feed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; that is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee against every connection problem (YouTube live streaming tips). If the stream is unstable, compare your available upload bandwidth with the encoder’s total bitrate and reduce the bitrate or output demands if necessary.
Troubleshoot common webcam-overlay problems
- The webcam is hidden behind the game or screen. Move its source higher in OBS’s Sources list; higher sources appear on top (OBS Sources Guide).
- The camera is blank or the wrong one appears. Open the Video Capture Device properties and select the intended camera (OBS webcam FAQ).
- The overlay blocks useful content. Select it in the preview, make it smaller, and move it to a less obstructive corner or edge.
- The stream is unstable. Check whether available upload bandwidth exceeds the total stream bitrate by YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom (YouTube live streaming tips).
- You cannot start a first broadcast yet. If live streaming has only just been enabled, allow for YouTube’s stated initial setup period of up to 24 hours (YouTube encoder setup).
