How to Add a Spectrum Visualizer to a 24/7 Music Livestream

Add an OBS spectrum visualizer that listens to your music source, loop a VLC playlist, and check the limits of unattended streaming and music rights.

To add a spectrum visualizer to a 24/7 music livestream in OBS Studio, install a compatible audio-visualizer source, set it to listen to the OBS source carrying your music, and layer it into your scene. For continuous playback, pair it with a looping playlist—but remember that a loop does not keep a computer, network, encoder, or YouTube stream running by itself.

How the visualizer fits into a continuous music stream

A spectrum visualizer draws a representation of audio—often bars or waves—over the video in your scene. It needs to receive the same audio source that carries the music in the stream mix. If it listens to a silent source, a microphone, or unrelated desktop audio, its display will not accurately react to the program music.

The simplest in-OBS route documented for this use is Audio Waves Visualizer. Its project describes a transparent video source that can read level and spectrum data from a selected active OBS source, including 64 spectrum bands. The OBS Project forum listing gives OBS Studio 32.0.2 as the minimum version and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Plugin compatibility can change, so check the current listing and installation instructions before proceeding: Audio Waves Visualizer on the OBS Project forum and the project repository.

Add an audio-reactive source in OBS

  1. Check compatibility and install. Confirm that the current plugin release supports your operating system and OBS version. Follow its current installation instructions, then restart OBS if the instructions require it.
  2. Identify the music source. Start playback and look at OBS’s audio meters. Note which source is carrying the music you intend viewers to hear; keep the audio routing straightforward so you can select the correct source.
  3. Add the visualizer to your scene. In the scene where the music video will appear, use the source-add control to add the Audio Waves Visualizer source. Choose the OBS audio source carrying the program music in the plugin’s source settings.
  4. Choose the look and composition. Select a bar or wave effect, set the source size and position, and place it over the background. Arrange the source order so the visualizer sits in front of the background and behind any title or branding that should remain legible.
  5. Check it with the actual mix. Play the music and confirm that the selected source’s OBS meter moves and the visualizer responds to that music. If it does not, recheck the selected source and audio routing before changing visual settings.
  6. Preview at the intended output size. Check that the display is readable and positioned correctly at the resolution you plan to stream. Watch a representative playback and confirm the visualizer continues to react across the material you will use.

Loop a playlist for repeat playback

OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of media items and offers loop and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when used with 64-bit OBS. See OBS Media Sources documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install the VLC version that matches your OBS architecture; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the scene and configure its media playlist.
  3. Enable the playlist loop option if you want playback to restart when it reaches the end. Use shuffle only if you want the playlist order randomized.
  4. Play through the playlist in OBS and check that the audio remains on the source selected by the visualizer, including across item changes.

Looping governs media playback, not end-to-end uptime. It does not promise that OBS will recover after a crash, that an encoder or internet connection will remain available, or that YouTube will keep accepting the stream. The reviewed OBS source documentation does not establish restart recovery, remote monitoring, or guaranteed continuous service. Test the complete playback and streaming path before relying on it unattended, and plan how you will notice and respond to a failure.

Choose an alternative only if it fits your setup

Spectralizer

Spectralizer’s OBS resource page describes visualizations of OBS audio sources, but its author says it has been deprecated in favor of Waveform. External visualizer software

SYQEL documents ways to bring reactive visuals into OBS through Spout on Windows or Mac Screen Share on macOS. This adds another application and a capture-source dependency, so consider it when you want a more elaborate visual layer and are prepared to manage the extra integration. Its setup claims are vendor documentation, not independent performance testing: SYQEL.

Now-playing metadata is a separate feature

Tuna is an optional OBS plugin for track metadata and cover-art overlays; its documentation describes integrations including VLC Video and methods for writing image and text files that OBS can use as sources. It can add track information, but it does not create the spectrum display: Tuna documentation.

Copyright still applies to the music

A visualizer changes how the music is displayed; it does not grant permission to broadcast it. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A stream may be interrupted or terminated when third-party content remains. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner through Content ID. Confirm the rights needed for livestreaming and any required allowlisting before going live. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot the setup before leaving it unattended

  • The visualizer is still or reacts to the wrong sound: Check its selected OBS audio source and verify that the music source’s meter moves during playback. A microphone or unrelated desktop source will not represent the intended music mix.
  • The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist stops at the end: Check the VLC Video source’s loop option. Looping restarts media playback at the playlist end; it does not restore a failed OBS session or stream.
  • The visualizer or playlist works in preview but not in the broadcast: Confirm the music is routed to the stream mix as well as to the visualizer’s selected source. Check the live output itself before unattended use.
  • The YouTube stream is interrupted: Check YouTube’s copyright notices and confirm that the music is cleared for livestream use, including any required Content ID allowlisting. A visualizer cannot prevent a rights-based interruption.
  • A plugin is missing or fails after an update: Recheck the plugin’s current OBS-version and operating-system requirements and follow its installation guidance. Compatibility may change with plugin and OBS releases.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the music stream to keep going without leaving a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo runs an uploaded-video YouTube livestream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. The visualizer approach above is an OBS scene workflow; StreamNeo’s stated service is for looping uploaded videos, so do not assume it reproduces an OBS visualizer scene.
