1. Choose and test the QR code destination
Decide what viewers should reach when they scan the code—for example, the product page featured in the demo. Generate or export the QR code as an image, then scan it with a phone to confirm that it opens the correct destination. Testing the destination separately catches a bad link before it becomes part of the broadcast.
2. Add the code as an encoder overlay
YouTube supports encoder-based live streams for advanced production, including overlays and graphics. Add the QR image to the scene or layout used for the product demo. The exact controls depend on your encoder; YouTube’s setup guidance notes that overlay setup varies by software, so consult the current instructions for the encoder you use. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and the OBS Help Portal are useful starting points.
Make the code practical to scan
- Place it where it does not cover the product, important demonstration details, or on-screen controls.
- Use enough size and contrast for the audience’s likely viewing distance and screen. There is no universal placement or size established for every layout, so check it in your own scene.
- Keep the code visible long enough for a viewer to point a phone at the screen and scan it. Check that the image remains sharp rather than blurred or obscured by other graphics.
3. Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and retrieve the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Enter those details in your encoder’s streaming setup to connect it to YouTube. Follow YouTube’s current encoder connection instructions; the names and locations of encoder controls vary by software.

A QR overlay does not replace the encoder-to-YouTube connection. The encoder sends the composed video—including the product footage and QR graphic—to the stream.
4. Preview and test before going live
Preview the completed layout before the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to what you plan to stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. For this demo, also view the preview on the kinds of screens your audience is likely to use and scan the QR code from a separate phone. Check both that the code is readable and that it opens the intended page. See YouTube’s guidance on encoder settings and stream health.

If you use horizontal and vertical layouts
Check each format separately. YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live formats, and a QR code that is visible in one layout may be cut off or too small in another. Review the final crop and scanability in every version you plan to stream. YouTube’s live-streaming guide covers the available formats.
5. Keep the demo looping
For a looping demo, make sure the encoder or streaming method you choose can repeat the video for the intended duration. The QR image should be part of the outgoing layout for the portions of the loop where viewers need it. Check the loop and overlay together in the preview; a code positioned well over one product shot may obscure a different shot when the video repeats.
