Add a Pomodoro timer to a continuous YouTube study stream by placing a timer webpage in an OBS Browser Source, fitting it to your scene, and testing how it behaves when the source reloads or becomes hidden. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. The timer is an overlay in the video—not a YouTube setting.
Add the timer in OBS
- Open the study-stream scene. In OBS, select the scene viewers will see while studying. Add a source and choose Browser (Browser Source).
- Choose the timer page. Enter a timer webpage URL, or select a local file if your chosen timer supports one. OBS Browser Source can load either. OBS describes Browser Source as “one of the most versatile sources available in OBS.” See OBS’s Browser Source documentation.
- Set the viewport. In the source properties, set the width and height to suit your stream layout. Position and resize the source in the preview; crop it if needed so the timer sits cleanly beside your study footage or other on-screen elements. OBS’s default custom CSS makes the page background transparent and removes body margins and scrollbars, but check the result in your own scene.
- Set the timer behavior. Choose focus and break durations, whether phases advance automatically or wait for a manual action, and whether phase labels and controls appear. These are choices offered by particular implementations, not universal Pomodoro requirements.
- Test source lifecycle behavior. In Browser Source properties, OBS has options named Shutdown source when not visible and Refresh browser source when scene becomes active. Both are off by default. Turning them on unloads the page while hidden or refreshes it when the scene activates. A timer may reset or resume after a reload depending on its implementation, so test the exact scene and settings before relying on it during a continuous broadcast.
Choose a timer implementation
A simple timer page is enough if you only need a visible countdown. If you need long breaks, automatic cycling, controls, or OBS scene changes, verify that the chosen implementation supports them and test those features before going live.
| Option | Documented features | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| r7kamura/obs-browser-sources | The repository documents a clockwork Pomodoro browser source with a default 50-minute work period and 10-minute break; URL parameters can set intervals such as 25/5 or 20/10. A separate timer page can switch OBS scenes named Work and Break. | Scene switching requires advanced OBS permission in that implementation. Grant it only if you need that function. The repository documentation describes project features; it is not an independent reliability assessment. |
| Bskasan/pomodoro-obs-overlay | The README documents a timer-only overlay mode and configurable study, short-break, and long-break durations, session count, long-break frequency, auto-start, and overlay controls. It describes the project as self-hosted and MIT-licensed. | Check the project’s current setup instructions and test the controls in your scene. The license and feature details here are claims in the project README, not an independent endorsement. |
| Kloot’s hosted-overlay guide | The guide presents a vendor-managed overlay added as one OBS Browser Source, with configurable focus, short-break, and long-break periods. Its example uses 25/5/15 and a long break every four cycles. | Before using a hosted page, check its current features, terms, account requirements, availability, and privacy implications. The guide was updated September 2026; its example settings are not required for a Pomodoro timer. |
These descriptions do not establish a controlled comparison of reliability, latency, privacy, or usability. Choose according to the features you need, and test timer state across scene changes and refreshes rather than assuming it will persist.
Send the OBS scene to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the matching encoder fields in OBS. Treat the stream key as private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder in OBS, then follow the stream’s status and control flow in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating or selecting a stream, entering the server URL and key, and starting the encoder.
YouTube’s cited help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete replay. If the full recording matters, check YouTube’s current archive guidance and plan a separate recording or archive workflow before starting a 24/7 stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the do-it-yourself route: the computer running it must stay available for the broadcast. If your goal is to keep uploaded study footage live on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and it streams to YouTube.
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; YouTube-drop recovery is automatic. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. India customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide.
