Keep the radio audio running in your encoder and add your microphone as a separate audio input. In OBS Studio, you can mute and unmute the mic in the Audio Mixer—or use a push-to-talk hotkey—without stopping the music source or ending the YouTube stream.
Set up the microphone without interrupting the radio
- Keep the current radio audio source active. Do not remove or mute the source that supplies the continuous music or radio program.
- Add the microphone as its own source in OBS. In the Sources panel, choose the option to add an Audio Input Capture source, then select the microphone you want to use. A USB microphone can connect directly if compatible with your computer. An XLR microphone may need a compatible audio interface or mixer, depending on your existing equipment. OBS documents device capture and scene-specific audio sources in its Audio Sources guide.
- Check for a moving meter. Speak at your usual announcement volume and watch the microphone channel in the Audio Mixer. If the meter does not move, check that the intended device is selected and available to OBS.
- Set and listen to the level. Adjust the microphone level so your voice is clear alongside the radio audio. Use audio monitoring or make a short recording and listen back; a meter alone cannot tell you whether the balance sounds right. OBS notes that microphone input may be quieter than computer-generated audio and recommends listening to the result. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Control the microphone independently. For each announcement, unmute the mic in the Audio Mixer, speak, then mute it again. If you prefer a key, configure a push-to-talk or push-to-mute hotkey for the microphone in OBS. Check the assigned key before going live so you know which control affects the mic.
- Test the complete sequence. Play representative radio audio, make a sample announcement, mute the mic, and listen to the resulting recording or stream preview. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and monitoring the stream. Its live streaming tips explain the value of testing and ongoing checks.
Avoid echo and keep the music in the active scene
In OBS, capturing the same microphone both as a scene source and through a global device in Settings → Audio can create duplicate audio and echo. Use one capture route for that device, not both. If you choose to put the microphone in a separate scene, make sure the continuous radio source is also available in that scene or routed independently. Otherwise, changing scenes for an announcement can interrupt the music. For a simple radio setup, one scene with the radio source continuously active and a separately controlled microphone is usually easier to manage.
Connect the encoder to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports external audio and video hardware, including microphones. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Keep the key private; it identifies the stream connection. Exact encoder menus vary by OBS version and operating system. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide covers the connection workflow.
Do not confuse a voice break with YouTube’s break overlay
YouTube’s live break overlay is a visual slate for when a creator steps away; it does not mute or change audio sources in the encoder. If you are leaving the microphone, mute it as YouTube advises. If the slate itself has audio, that audio must be included as a source in the encoder. A spoken announcement over music is different: keep the radio source active and control the mic separately. Troubleshooting a voice break
- The microphone meter stays still: Confirm the correct input device is selected, connected, and available to OBS; then speak again while watching the meter.
- The voice echoes: Check whether the same microphone is captured both globally in Settings → Audio and as a scene source. Disable one route.
- The voice is too quiet or too loud beside the music: Adjust the mic level while the radio source is playing, then listen to a recording or monitored output at normal listening volume.
- The music stops when you switch scenes: Add the radio source to the break scene or route it independently. Alternatively, use a single scene and mute or unmute only the microphone.
- The microphone stays live after the announcement: Mute it in the Audio Mixer or use the configured push-to-mute control. Verify the control’s assignment during a test before relying on it live.
- The YouTube break slate appears but the audio does not change: That is expected; the overlay is visual. Manage microphone and other audio sources in the encoder.
