In OBS Studio, add your prerecorded video as a Media Source, place a logo Image Source and ticker Text or Browser Source above it, then apply OBS’s Scroll filter to move the ticker. Send the finished scene to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This gives you a branded live broadcast while the video plays.
What you need
- The prerecorded video file you want to broadcast.
- A logo image. A transparent PNG is a practical choice when you want the video to show through around the logo.
- The ticker wording, kept concise enough to read at your chosen output size.
- OBS Studio and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
OBS Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. Image Source supports PNG, JPEG/JPG, GIF, BMP and TGA. See the OBS Media Sources guide and Image Source guide for details.
Build the composition in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene you will use for the broadcast. The scene is the composition sent to the stream.
- Add the video. In Sources, click the add button and choose Media Source. Select the prerecorded file and check playback and audio in the preview. Media Source’s Loop option is off by default; turn it on only if you want the clip to repeat.
- Add the logo. Add an Image source and select the logo file. Resize and position it in the preview. Keep it clear of important documentary imagery, captions and other information viewers need to see.
- Add the ticker. Add a Text source for straightforward text, or a Browser source if you want a designed ticker rendered from a local or web page. Position it where it will not obscure essential content.
- Apply the Scroll filter. Right-click the ticker source, open Filters, and add the Scroll filter. Set horizontal speed and direction; negative horizontal speed moves left, while positive speed moves right. Choose whether the source loops after it moves offscreen. The filter can also limit width and height to constrain the ticker strip. OBS documents marquee text as one use for the filter in its Scroll Filter guide.
- Check source order and framing. Keep the video below the logo and ticker in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear above lower sources and can cover them. Review the whole scene in the preview at the intended output dimensions; make sure the logo and ticker are visible and the moving text remains readable.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a broadcast in Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder setup help. Keep the key private because it grants access to the stream connection.
- Start the OBS stream output and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture, ticker, logo and audio before selecting Go live for a scheduled broadcast.
Test the stream before broadcasting
Use a test to check audio and movement similar to what the broadcast will contain, then monitor stream health while live. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your internet connection can sustain; a larger setting is not useful if the connection cannot carry it reliably. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, and says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and quality guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The logo or ticker is hidden. Move its source above the video in the Sources list, then check its position and visibility in the preview.
- The ticker does not move. Confirm that the Scroll filter is applied to the ticker source, then check its speed and direction settings.
- The ticker disappears and does not return. Check the filter’s looping setting; enable looping if you want the source to repeat after moving offscreen.
- The video stops after one play-through. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties if the clip should repeat. Looping is off by default.
- YouTube has no incoming preview. Verify that OBS has the correct server URL and stream key for the selected YouTube broadcast, then check the connection and stream status in Live Control Room.
- Viewers cannot hear the video. Check audio playback in OBS before going live and confirm that the incoming preview includes sound.
- The stream health is poor. Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate to settings the available connection can sustain, and test again before broadcasting.
When a standalone encoder makes sense
YouTube’s encoder listing includes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone option. Its listing says PlayToStream can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live and that its built-in graphics and layout tools include logos and lower-thirds. The cited listing does not establish scrolling ticker support, so confirm that capability with the manufacturer if a moving ticker is essential. This hardware is an alternative for someone seeking a dedicated appliance, not a requirement for the OBS method. See YouTube’s encoder listing.
