The most reliable approach is to make the order explicit: either include the slate as media between the VOD files in a playback sequence, or switch to a dedicated slate scene at each video boundary. OBS documents VLC playlist playback, but does not promise to insert a separate slate automatically after every playlist item.
Choose how the countdown will appear
A countdown slate can be a short video with an animated timer, a static image, or a scene built from editable text and other sources. The choice affects both how much control you have and how you sequence it between VODs.

For a predictable unattended sequence, embedding the slate in the ordered media sequence makes the intended order clear. If you want to control the transitions yourself, use separate scenes and switch at each boundary. The OBS Media Sources guide does not document automatic insertion of a separate slate after each VLC playlist entry, so do not assume that a playlist alone will trigger it.
Prepare OBS and VLC

Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the architectures match.

Open the OBS scene where you want the VOD playback. In Sources, add a VLC Video source and load the gaming VOD files in the order you want them to play.

Check the VLC Video source’s playlist controls. Set looping or shuffle only if those options match the show you intend to run. For a fixed sequence with slates between videos, avoid shuffle and verify the order.
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and provides loop and shuffle controls; the OBS Media Sources guide also documents local video and audio playback through a regular Media Source. See the OBS Media Sources guide for the documented source settings.
Build the countdown slate
For an animated countdown

Create or prepare a local countdown video with the duration and wording you want. Add it to a dedicated OBS scene as a Media Source.

In the Media Source settings, enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the countdown should begin at its first frame each time you activate the slate scene. OBS documents this playback option; check it in your own setup before going live.

Set up the scene’s audio deliberately. If the countdown file contains sound, check its level and how it interacts with the VOD audio in the OBS mixer.
For a static or editable slate

Add an Image source for a fixed slate.

Add a Text source for editable wording, such as “Next match starts soon.”

If you need a visible timer, a still image alone is not a countdown. Use countdown media or add a timer source that you have verified in your OBS setup.

Put the slate between the VODs
Option A: Make one ordered playback sequence
Arrange the playback so the countdown media sits between the gaming VOD files: VOD 1, countdown, VOD 2, and so on. This makes the desired order explicit. Confirm that the playback source and your specific OBS arrangement advance through that sequence as intended; the documented VLC playlist behavior does not establish that a separate slate will be inserted automatically after each entry.

Option B: Switch to a slate scene at each boundary

Keep the VOD playback and countdown slate in the scenes or sources you plan to use.

At the end of each VOD, switch to the countdown scene, then return to the VOD playback when the slate finishes.

Use OBS hotkeys if they make those switches practical. Set them in OBS and rehearse the exact transitions; hotkeys make a manual switch easier but do not, on their own, establish automatic switching at every playlist boundary.
Choose the method that fits how closely you can monitor the broadcast. If you need a slate to occur reliably between every item without an operator, test the full sequence in advance rather than relying on undocumented playlist behavior.

In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect or enter the stream key as the interface offers. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or publish it.

Return to YouTube’s live control room and OBS, then start the stream from OBS when the preview and stream details are ready. Confirm in YouTube that the incoming encoder feed appears as expected before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes software and hardware encoder workflows and lists gameplay broadcasts among encoder uses. OBS is a software encoder; dedicated encoder hardware is not required for the workflow described here.

Run a private or otherwise non-public rehearsal from the first VOD through the final transition. Check the parts most likely to fail at a boundary:

The slate appears between the correct videos and lasts as long as intended.

An animated countdown restarts from its opening frame when the slate is activated.

VOD and slate audio levels are usable, with no unintended overlap or silent gap.

The return from slate to VOD is clean, and the YouTube control room receives the OBS output.

A rehearsal is especially important if the sequence depends on scene switches or a configuration beyond the documented playlist controls; transition results depend on the setup you actually use.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for gaming VODs
Before streaming, confirm you have the rights needed for the gameplay recording and any music, overlays, or other third-party material it contains. A countdown slate does not change the rights status of the VODs. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements in your channel’s YouTube Studio and help resources; eligibility and enforcement can depend on the channel and content. Do not assume that replaying a recording as a live broadcast makes it eligible for monetization or exempts it from reused-content review.
Common problems and fixes
