To put a countdown or slate between videos in a YouTube loop stream, include it as an item in the playback sequence or build a scene transition that deliberately shows it. OBS Studio can loop a VLC playlist, but its documented VLC Video source does not automatically insert a separate slate between each playlist item. For reliable results, prepare the sequence explicitly, test it in OBS preview, then send the encoder feed to YouTube Live.
Choose how the interstitial will play
A slate is a still image or simple text screen; a countdown can be a prepared video with motion and audio, or a simple text treatment. The most dependable method is to make each interstitial part of the media sequence: video, slate or countdown, next video, and so on. OBS also lets you arrange sources in scenes, but transitions between playlist items need to be deliberately configured and tested.
- For a straightforward repeating sequence: make a single combined video containing the clips and interstitials, or add the slate/countdown media files in the required order to a VLC playlist.
- For a static slate or simple text: add an image or text source in OBS and arrange an explicit scene transition to show it.
- For a moving countdown: use a prepared countdown video as a media source or playlist item.
OBS documents playlist playback and looping, and its source guide describes media and text sources. Those features do not establish that VLC Video inserts a separate asset between every playlist item automatically. Build the transition into your sequence rather than relying on an undocumented automatic insertion feature. OBS: Media Sources · OBS: Sources Guide
Set up the repeating sequence in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC. Check OBS’s media-source requirements.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, then add the files in the order you want them played. Give the playlist a clear sequence, for example: documentary segment 1, slate, documentary segment 2, countdown, documentary segment 3.
- Check the loop option. In the VLC Video source’s settings, enable Loop Playlist so the sequence restarts when it reaches the end. OBS’s documentation notes that this option is on by default, but check the current setting rather than assuming it is enabled.
- Add any other slate elements. For a separate static image or text treatment, add an image or text source to an OBS scene. If the slate is not an item in the VLC playlist, configure a scene/source arrangement that explicitly displays it at the right moment.
- Test the full sequence in OBS preview. Watch the transitions, confirm each clip and interstitial appears in the intended order, and check that audio does not overlap or continue unexpectedly. Test a complete cycle, including the restart at the end of the playlist.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or open the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder settings in OBS. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the picture, audio, and stream health.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live in the Live Control Room after the preview appears and you are ready to begin the public broadcast.
These steps follow YouTube’s encoder workflow; exact screen details can vary as YouTube updates Studio. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Stop the stream and understand archiving
When the broadcast is finished, stop sending content from OBS and complete the end-stream flow in YouTube’s Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable: install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist ends instead of restarting: open the VLC Video source settings and verify Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The slate does not appear between clips: VLC playlist looping does not mean OBS automatically inserts a separate slate. Put the slate/countdown in the ordered media sequence or configure and test an explicit scene transition.
- YouTube has no incoming preview: confirm OBS is sending, and check that the stream URL and stream key in OBS match the active YouTube stream in Live Control Room.
- The preview appears but the public stream has not started: for a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow requires you to wait for the preview and then click Go live in the Live Control Room.
Local OBS or a cloud-hosted loop?
With OBS, the playlist files are played by a local encoder, so the computer, media files, and internet connection must remain available for the duration of the stream. That gives you direct control over the sequence, but a local machine or home connection becoming unavailable can interrupt the broadcast.
