The right way depends on what you mean by “live.” For a scheduled YouTube Premiere, choose a countdown theme and duration in Premiere setup. For an encoder-based Live stream carrying prerecorded video, YouTube’s cited guidance does not document a built-in Premiere-style countdown control; put the countdown in the feed sent by your encoder instead.
Choose the right YouTube format

If the countdown must be part of a true Live broadcast, create it as part of the program output or encoder scene. The exact setup depends on the encoder; check that encoder’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular button or feature.
Add a countdown to a YouTube Premiere
- In YouTube Studio, upload the finished video.
- In the video’s Visibility settings, schedule it as a public video.
- Select Set as Premiere, then open Set up Premiere.
- Choose a countdown theme and countdown length, then finish scheduling.
- Share the Premiere watch page ahead of time. Viewers can visit, set reminders, chat, and comment.
YouTube says the countdown starts at the scheduled time. Once it ends, viewers watch the video together in real time. They can rewind, but cannot skip ahead to material that has not yet been shown. After the Premiere, the upload remains a regular video; the countdown theme is not added to the video file. [YouTube Premiere guidance]
Use a countdown in an encoder-based Live stream
Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then connect your encoder using the stream URL and stream key YouTube provides. Since the cited YouTube encoder instructions do not identify a built-in countdown selector for this workflow, prepare a countdown as part of the outgoing program or encoder scene and verify the method in your encoder’s documentation.

Optional: add a trailer to the watch page
A trailer is separate from an on-air countdown: it is an item on the scheduled stream’s watch page, not a documented countdown inserted into the encoder feed. YouTube’s documented path is Live Control Room → select the scheduled stream → Edit → Customize → add a trailer → Save. The cited guide says trailer eligibility requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; the trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long and meet YouTube’s supported video, rights, and Community Guidelines requirements. Prepare and test before the scheduled start
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the stream, as YouTube recommends.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and test the full setup.
- Confirm the stream’s visibility from both your channel and its watch page.

Why the countdown option may be missing
The countdown theme and duration controls belong to Premiere setup. A scheduled public upload that is not a Premiere, and a scheduled encoder-based Live stream, are different workflows. If you need YouTube’s configurable countdown, set the video up as a Premiere; if it must be an encoder-based Live stream, build the countdown into the outgoing feed.
