Add the ticker to your video in OBS before sending the finished scene to YouTube: build a branded ticker as a hosted web page or local HTML file, load it as an OBS Browser Source, position and test it, then connect OBS to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key. First confirm you have permission to show the listing details, photos, prices, and other data in a public broadcast.
What you need
- OBS Studio on Windows, macOS, or Linux, with your video or loop already arranged as a scene.
- A ticker page you control, either hosted at a URL or saved as a local HTML file. It should show your brand and only the listing information you are authorized to broadcast.
- A YouTube live stream configured in YouTube Studio, plus the stream URL and stream key for OBS.
- Enough stable upload bandwidth for the resolution and bitrate you choose. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate rather than assuming a connection can sustain a target. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Prepare the ticker and verify listing rights
Choose the content and update method
Create a page with the brokerage or channel identity and concise listing details that viewers can read while the video continues. A hosted page is useful when you need to change the ticker remotely; a local file avoids reliance on that page being reachable during the stream, but changes must be made in the file and reloaded. In either case, check the rendered result before broadcast.
Confirm permission before publishing
Do not assume an MLS or IDX feed, listing photos, prices, agent details, or other property information may be republished in a public stream. Check the applicable data agreement, brokerage policy, and market-specific rules with the listing-data provider or rights holder. OBS and YouTube explain how to display and transmit content; they do not grant rights to that content.
Add the ticker as an OBS Browser Source
- Open the scene that contains the video or loop in OBS.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Browser. Give the source a recognizable name.
- For a hosted ticker, enter its URL. For a local ticker, enable the local-file option and select the HTML file.
- Set the Browser Source width and height to the intended overlay viewport. OBS also provides controls for custom CSS, frame rate, and refresh behavior; use these only as needed for your page. The available controls are documented in the OBS Browser Source guide.
- Place the Browser Source above the video source in the Sources list so it appears over the video. Drag it into position and resize it in the preview. Lock the source once placed to avoid moving it accidentally.
Make the overlay readable and unobtrusive
- Use strong contrast between the ticker text and its background, and check legibility at the output resolution rather than only while editing.
- Keep the ticker inside safe margins so text is not clipped at the frame edge or covered by YouTube interface elements on common screens.
- Choose a scrolling pace that viewers can follow. Preview a full pass of the longest listing, including any price, address, or contact detail you intend to show.
- Check whether the overlay hides important parts of the video. If it does, move or resize it, or simplify the ticker content.
- If the ticker pulls data from a hosted source, verify that the page loads and updates as expected before going live. Avoid relying on a feed whose public display permissions or availability you have not confirmed.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the stream URL and key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use the server and key details provided for the stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Open Settings > Output and set the encoder and bitrate appropriate for your computer, connection, and chosen output. YouTube’s published recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the resolution and bitrate guidance that applies to your stream.
- Under Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate for the finished scene. Your ticker is part of that encoded picture, so check that the text remains sharp and readable at the selected output size.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room, review it, and use YouTube’s controls to go live when ready.
Test the complete loop before going live
Run a representative test with the intended video, ticker motion, and audio. YouTube specifically recommends testing before starting a live stream and monitoring stream health. Verify the ticker does not freeze, clip, or cover key visuals; listen for audio problems; and check YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Settings can change, so consult its current encoder guidance before each production setup.

Troubleshooting
The ticker is blank
Check that the URL is correct or that the local HTML file is selected, then refresh the Browser Source. For hosted content, confirm the page is reachable and does not require a login or block loading in an embedded browser.
The ticker is cropped or misplaced
Compare the Browser Source viewport dimensions with the scene output dimensions. Resize and reposition the source in the OBS preview, then inspect the full frame at the output resolution.

Text is too small or scrolls too quickly
Adjust the page’s typography or ticker animation, then preview a complete pass. If necessary, simplify each item rather than shrinking text until it becomes difficult to read.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm OBS is using the correct stream URL and current key for the intended YouTube broadcast. Check the encoder settings and available upload bandwidth, then inspect Live Control Room for stream-health information.

The stream starts, but the loop or overlay stops updating
Check whether the video source, ticker page, or network connection is the point of failure. A hosted ticker depends on its page being available; a local file depends on the local machine running OBS. Test the same setup for long enough to catch intermittent failures before relying on it for an extended broadcast.
The listing provider objects to the display
Stop showing the disputed material and confirm the applicable license, feed agreement, and brokerage rules with the rights holder. A technically successful overlay does not establish permission to rebroadcast listing content.
