This repeats the tracks when the list ends; it does not, by itself, detect a failed main audio feed or switch to the backup. Those are separate tasks.
Choose the kind of backup you need
“Backup” can mean alternate audio content, automatic switching when a source fails, or a second path for sending the encoder feed to YouTube. These are different configurations:
- Repeating backup playlist: a set of local audio files that plays in sequence and starts over at the end. OBS’s VLC Video Source supports a playlist and a Loop Playlist control.
- Automatic audio failover: switching from a main programme source to backup audio when the main source fails. The OBS playlist loop setting does not establish that failure detection or switching is configured.
- Backup ingestion: a second path for delivering a stream to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup offers a Backup server URL for this purpose; it is not a list of backup songs.
The steps below set up a repeating local playlist. If you need automatic failover, configure and test a separate source-switching mechanism.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Prepare the audio files. Place the fallback tracks in a local folder the streaming computer can access. Play them first to confirm they work, and decide whether they should run in a specific order.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. Match the application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add the source. In OBS, open the scene that will be used for the stream, add a VLC Video Source, and add the audio files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Leave shuffle off if the order matters. For just one audio file, use an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option instead.
- Check the scene and audio routing. Confirm the VLC source is active in the scene being sent to YouTube and that its audio meter moves. Make a test recording or a private or unlisted test stream, then listen to verify the sound is present.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream. In OBS’s stream settings, enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube, then start the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Test the transitions. Confirm the last playlist item proceeds to the first. If you intend the backup to take over when the main audio fails, test that switch separately; playlist looping alone does not provide evidence that failure detection is working.
What OBS looping does—and does not do
Loop Playlist repeats the files in the VLC source when playback reaches the end of the list. It is useful for keeping backup or standby audio available as a repeating programme. It is not the same as an automatic failover rule: the cited OBS controls describe playlist playback and looping, not detection of a failed primary source.

If uninterrupted switching matters, identify how the main feed’s failure will be detected, what signal or condition triggers the change, and how the backup will become audible in the live scene. Configure that mechanism separately and test both the switch to backup and the return to the main programme. Do not assume a playlist’s repeat setting handles either transition.
When YouTube’s backup server URL is relevant
YouTube’s HLS instructions refer to a Backup server URL for a second ingest path. That protects a different part of the setup than an alternate audio playlist: it concerns how an encoder sends a stream to YouTube, not what songs play if the programme audio fails.

The YouTube HLS setup instructions specify HLS details including 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. These are HLS-specific requirements, not generic settings for an OBS RTMP playlist setup.

Troubleshooting the backup playlist
- The VLC Video Source is unavailable or will not play files: install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops at the final track: check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source. A single-file Media Source uses its separate Loop setting.
- The stream has no backup audio: confirm the source is in the active scene, check that its audio meter moves, and listen to a recording or private/unlisted stream. Verify audio routing in OBS.
- The tracks play in an unexpected order: arrange the files in the intended sequence and turn off shuffle if order matters.
- The main programme fails but backup does not take over: the loop setting only repeats the playlist. Configure and test a separate failure-detection and source-switching mechanism.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that OBS has the stream URL and current stream key from the selected stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- You expected the HLS backup URL to play alternate music: it is for a second ingestion path, not an audio playlist. Configure the audio source in the encoder separately.
Use music you have the right to stream
A technically working playlist does not establish that its tracks may be broadcast. Use audio you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream on YouTube, and check the applicable rights for every track. A backup playlist is still part of the public stream and can raise the same rights issues as the main programme.
For another option when the goal is continuous operation rather than local encoding, YouTube’s encoder help page lists hosted streaming services, including Gyre. Check any service’s current features, price, and monetization terms directly before choosing it.
