You usually don’t upload a separate 3D file. Create a Bitmoji in Snapchat or link an existing Bitmoji account, and Snapchat displays the linked avatar in your personal profile’s 3D Bitmoji header. Do the setup in the Snapchat mobile app; Snapchat says full Bitmoji creation and customization aren’t available on web or desktop.
What “adding a 3D Bitmoji” means
Snapchat describes the avatar displayed prominently on a personal profile as a 3D Bitmoji header. It is an account-linked avatar rendered within Snapchat, not an image or 3D model you upload separately.
- Personal profile header: Your Bitmoji displayed on your Snapchat profile.
- Bitmoji customization: Editing the avatar’s appearance, clothes, profile selfie, pose, or background.
- 3D Bitmoji Lens: A separate augmented-reality effect opened from the rear-facing Camera and Lens carousel.
- Public Profile: A separate profile area with its own editable details and branding; its photo is not the personal 3D Bitmoji header.
A Public Profile, Snapchat+ subscription, or separate 3D-design software is not required for the standard personal-profile avatar.

Create a new Bitmoji in Snapchat
- Open the Snapchat app on your iPhone or Android phone.
- From the Camera screen, tap your Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open your profile or My Account screen.
- Tap Create My Avatar.
- Follow the on-screen setup to create your avatar, then return to your profile to see its header.
Snapchat documents this creation route in its Bitmoji creation and editing instructions. Labels and icon placement can vary by app version, operating system, account state, and rollout.

Link a Bitmoji you already have
If your avatar is in the separate Bitmoji app, link that account to Snapchat rather than creating another one:
- Install or update Snapchat and Bitmoji on your phone.
- Open the Bitmoji app and tap the gear icon.
- Choose Link to Snapchat.
- Tap Continue and complete the linking prompts.
Snapchat says an account already linked to a Bitmoji cannot be linked to a different Bitmoji account until the existing link is removed. Check which account is connected before making changes. See Snapchat’s linking and unlinking instructions.

Customize the profile header
- Open your Snapchat profile.
- Tap the 3D Bitmoji header, or pull down on the profile card, to open its customization controls.
- Choose an available pose and background. Tap the share icon if you want to share that customized display elsewhere.
Other avatar controls may appear in the same menu: Avatar or Edit Avatar changes appearance; Fashion or Change Outfit changes clothes and accessories; Selfie or Change Selfie changes the profile-facing expression; and Scene or Pose and Background adjusts the display. Exact names and available options can differ. Snapchat explains header controls here.
If your 3D Bitmoji isn’t showing
- Use the mobile app. Snapchat’s current support guidance says full Bitmoji creation and customization are mobile-only.
- Update Snapchat and Bitmoji. Then fully close and reopen Snapchat so the profile can refresh.
- Restart your phone if reopening the app does not help.
- Check your connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then revisit your profile.
- Open the personal profile. Tap or pull down on the avatar header; a Public Profile editing screen is a different area.
- Verify the linked account. If the wrong avatar appears, check which Bitmoji account is linked before unlinking it.
- Report a persistent problem through Snapchat’s in-app support or bug-reporting flow. Snapchat’s support topic includes related troubleshooting guidance.
Take care before unlinking: Snapchat warns that unlinking a Bitmoji created through Snapchat can permanently delete that avatar and saved Closet items, including purchased items. Don’t use unlinking as a routine reset step.

If you mean your Public Profile
Changing a Public Profile photo does not set the personal 3D Bitmoji header. To edit the public-facing profile, tap your Bitmoji or Story icon, tap Public Profile, then tap the pencil icon or Edit. Depending on the account and available features, Public Profile controls can include a bio, profile photo, cover photo, Stories, Lenses, and follower-count settings. Snapchat describes the separate workflow in its Public Profile editing guide and its overview of profiles on Snapchat.
Is Snapchat+ required?
No subscription is needed to create and display the standard Bitmoji header. Snapchat documents AI-generated profile backgrounds as an optional Snapchat+ feature, not a requirement for adding the avatar; availability may vary. Details are in its AI Profile backgrounds guide.

Profile avatar or 3D Bitmoji Lens?
The profile header is the avatar shown on your personal profile. A 3D Bitmoji Lens is a separate camera effect: open Snapchat’s rear-facing Camera and browse the Lens carousel. Using a Lens does not add or configure the profile header.
