How TikTok Is Helping Stand-Up Comedians Reach New Audiences

TikTok has helped comedians build audiences in different ways, but viral clips are only one part of the story. These reported examples trace the route from short-form comedy to live shows and other opportunities.

TikTok has helped some comedians turn short videos into a route to live audiences and broader opportunities—but a popular clip is not proof that the platform alone made a career, or a preview of a performer’s entire act. The examples below show different paths: movie-trope parodies, observational sketches, conversational commentary and crowd work, alongside the writing and stage practice that short clips cannot capture.

How TikTok can help a comedian find an audience

Short videos make it possible for a comic’s voice or character to travel beyond a club audience. That can draw attention to live shows, but the reporting here documents individual career paths rather than proving TikTok caused their success. Comedian Kyle Kazanjian-Amory, founder of Don’t Tell Comedy, told NPR/CapRadio, “It’s kind of democratized things, where comedians aren’t necessarily as reliant on gatekeepers.”

These examples are reported cases, not a definitive ranking or a complete directory of TikTok-associated stand-up. Their follower counts are dated snapshots and should not be compared as if measured at the same time.

Comedians whose short-form formats led in different directions

Delaney Rowe: movie-trope parodies and character work

NPR reported in 2024 that Rowe built an audience with parodies of familiar movie tropes and had nearly 3 million TikTok followers at the time. The same report said she had representation by a major Hollywood agent and appeared in films. Her example shows how a comic persona developed in short sketches can lead to opportunities beyond live comedy; it does not establish that TikTok alone produced those opportunities. Josh Robinson: situational sketches

Robinson, who posts as Omgitswicks, made Florida-themed videos. NPR reported that his account had 1.5 million TikTok followers at the time of its 2024 story, and that sponsorship income from his online work allowed him to leave a customer-service job. That is a creator-income route, distinct from evidence that a particular stand-up tour sold out. NPR/CapRadio’s report

Darcy Michael and Jeremy Baer: couple comedy to joint live shows

NPR reported that the couple’s day-in-the-life videos built an audience across platforms, after which clubs and theaters invited them to perform together. They went on tour and had a special planned, according to the report. Their path is not simply a solo stand-up comic converting TikTok followers into tickets: the online format centered on their relationship, and the reported live work was a joint performance. Henry Rowley: sketches and characters on stage

In January 2024, Time Out reported that Rowley had 1.3 million TikTok followers and was preparing his first solo hour at the Edinburgh Fringe. Later that year, The Standard reviewed his show at Alexandra Palace Theatre and reported a sold-out audience of 800. The review said roughly 799 people indicated in an onstage poll that they had found him through clips. That was a quick poll at one show, not a representative audience survey. The Standard also described sketches in the performance, so it is more accurate to call it a live show combining comedy forms than a conventional stand-up-only set. Connor Wood: online commentary alongside written stand-up

GQ reported in October 2024 that Wood’s TikTok and podcast audiences accompanied a tour of sold-out shows. Wood said he had not broadly posted his stand-up material and described his live jokes as mostly observational. He also emphasized the repetition involved in developing a set: “It is about just going up and sucking or doing well to get reps in.” His account makes the distinction between an online following and the work of testing jokes in front of a live audience. Lucas Zelnick: crowd-work clips, but more written material live

GQ reported viral TikTok clips of Zelnick doing crowd work and a national tour. Zelnick said his touring set contained substantially more written jokes than crowd work, and that he was selective about what he posted. A clip of spontaneous audience interaction can travel well online without representing the structure or balance of the full show. GQ’s interview

Discovery can come through a comedy producer, too

TikTok is not the only route by which short comedy clips can lead people to live shows. Axios reported in 2024 that Don’t Tell Comedy pairs social clips with pop-up performances in unexpected venues. Its founder, Kazanjian-Amory, described the appeal as: “You’re able to go to a place that’s very familiar, but for an experience that is unfamiliar to that space,”

Axios named Ralph Barbosa, Susan Rice, Katherine Blanford, Alec Flynn and Lea’h Sampson among comedians whose careers the company’s videos accelerated. It also reported that Don’t Tell Comedy had more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers and that the company said it was on pace to host over 4,500 shows in 200 cities in 2024. The show total was the company’s projection, not an independently audited final count. Axios’s report

Does TikTok fame mean a comedian’s live show is just their clips?

No. The reporting shows several different relationships between online material and stage work. Rowley’s reviewed show included sketches; Wood described writing observational jokes and repeatedly trying them onstage; Zelnick said his touring set had much more written stand-up than the crowd work that circulated online. The format that wins attention in a short video may be only one part of a longer performance.

For readers deciding whether an online comic’s show is likely to suit them, look for a description of the live format or a review of the actual performance rather than assuming a viral clip is representative. The named reporting supports particular outcomes—touring, a solo hour, invited joint performances or a sold-out date—but not a guarantee that online popularity converts into live demand for every comedian.
