But a view, a viral moment or a track save is not the same as a stream, a royalty or proof that TikTok caused a song’s success. The distinction matters: TikTok commissioned the 2025 report and supplied proprietary engagement and virality data; Luminate contributed consumption and audience measures. Its findings analyze 2024 data and are not an independent causal test.
How does TikTok affect music discovery?
Short videos put music into settings listeners encounter while watching: dances, jokes, edits, personal stories and other creator-made formats. A track can circulate as part of a shared idea rather than only as a standalone release. That gives artists and labels a way to put music in front of potential listeners, while users can share or reuse sounds in their own videos.
In its 2025 Music Impact Report, TikTok says US TikTok users were 74% more likely than the average short-form-video user to discover and share new music on social and short-form-video platforms. This is a comparison between audience groups, not a count of artists whose careers TikTok launched or a measure of how many listeners became fans.
The report’s examples range from newer breakout artists such as Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter to catalog acts such as Korn and Alphaville. They illustrate the range of music discussed in the report; they do not show how often a TikTok trend leads to lasting success.

Do TikTok songs get more streams?
The 2025 TikTok/Luminate report finds a relationship between TikTok engagement and streaming, but its figures describe association and sequence—not proof that TikTok alone caused more listening.
- TikTok total views were significantly related to streaming volumes for 96% of the artists analyzed.
- Artists the report labels “TikTok-Correlated Artists” had average week-over-week streaming growth of 11%, compared with 3% for artists whose TikTok engagement was less related to streaming volumes.
- Of songs that entered the Billboard Global 200 in 2024, 84% had first experienced a period of high TikTok engagement, which the report defines as having “gone viral.” This says what happened before chart entry; it does not show what would have happened to those songs without TikTok.
These are report findings based on TikTok’s engagement data and Luminate’s music data. A correlation can reflect several influences at once, including release promotion, existing popularity, artist activity and listeners moving between platforms. The results do not establish a universal effect for every song or artist.

Can a TikTok discovery turn into listening outside the app?
It can create a path. TikTok says its Add to Music App feature, rolled out in 2024, had generated more than one billion track saves by the time of the 2025 report. The feature lets a user save a track encountered on TikTok to a participating music app.
A save is an action in a music app, not evidence that the person completed a stream, started a paid subscription or generated a particular royalty. The report does not provide a conversion rate from saves to listening or earnings. TikTok’s newsroom also listed a May 2025 Add to Music App partnership with SoundCloud, but the listing itself does not establish how many saves or streams that partnership generated (TikTok Newsroom news listing).

Does TikTok activity mean artists earn more?
Not by itself. The reports measure audience behavior and platform engagement; they do not publish a comparable current royalty rate for each TikTok use by territory, label, publisher or rights type. They also do not give a universal estimate of what an individual artist earns from a viral moment.
In the 2025 report, US music listeners who use TikTok were 68% more likely to use a paid music-streaming subscription than the US general population. TikTok users in the US spent 46% more per month on music than the average US music listener. These comparisons indicate that the TikTok audience studied is relatively active as music consumers; they do not show that TikTok caused that spending or disclose how revenue is divided among platforms, labels, publishers, performers and songwriters.

The findings are not interchangeable with the earlier TikTok/Luminate report, which covers 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. Its US comparison found 62% of TikTok users paid for music streaming, against 43% of US consumers overall. It also reported higher participation among US TikTok users than among overall US music listeners in live music attendance and artist merchandise purchases:
| Measure | TikTok users in the earlier report | Comparison group | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid music streaming | 62% | 43% of US consumers overall | US; 1 July 2022–30 June 2023 |
| Attended a live music event in the prior 12 months | 38% | 33% of overall US music listeners | US; 1 July 2022–30 June 2023 |
| Purchased artist merchandise in the prior 12 months | 45% | 35% of overall US music listeners | US; 1 July 2022–30 June 2023 |
These earlier figures come from the 2023 TikTok/Luminate Music Impact Report; they are not the latest survey results and should not be read as a direct trend comparison with the 2025 report’s differently described populations and measures. That report also found higher interest in international music among TikTok users in its studied markets, including a greater likelihood among US TikTok users to listen to non-English music than among music listeners overall. This is a survey finding for the markets and period studied, not evidence that language barriers have disappeared.

How does TikTok fit into the wider music business?
TikTok’s audience findings describe particular user groups; they are not TikTok’s share of music-industry revenue. For the broader baseline, IFPI reported that global recorded-music trade revenue reached US$29.6 billion in 2024, up 4.8% from 2023. Streaming represented 69.0% of that revenue, or US$20.4 billion. IFPI also reported 752 million users of subscription accounts globally, up 10.6% in 2024, and vinyl revenue growth of 4.6%—its 18th consecutive year of growth.
| IFPI measure | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Global recorded-music trade revenue | US$29.6 billion; up 4.8% | Global market, 2024 |
| Streaming share of recorded-music revenue | 69.0% | Global market, 2024 |
| Global streaming revenue | US$20.4 billion | Global market, 2024 |
| Users of subscription accounts | 752 million; up 10.6% | Global, 2024 |
| Vinyl revenue growth | 4.6% | Global, 2024; 18th consecutive year of growth |
These figures are from IFPI’s 2025 release on 2024 recorded-music revenues. IFPI says its market revenue figures come from member record companies and are checked through its country-level national groups. It notes that historic local-currency values can vary retrospectively because of currency movements; the figures above are the published US-dollar totals and 2024 measures.
What can’t the reports tell us about a viral song?
A high view count may help a track travel, but the reports do not establish how much of any specific song’s later success came from TikTok. Nor do aggregate findings show whether outcomes are distributed evenly among independent and major-label artists, performers and songwriters, or new and catalog tracks. A viral moment may contribute to discovery without producing durable listening or income for every rights holder.
One related EU analysis makes its estimation approach explicit: Public First’s methodology models incremental music-related royalties and revenue across streaming, live music and merchandise, using market estimates, a spending difference attributed to Luminate research, platform penetration estimates and artist-origin shares. Such a result is a modeled estimate, not a direct observation or randomized causal measurement (Public First methodology for TikTok and economic growth in the EU).
The clearest conclusion is narrower than “TikTok makes hits”: TikTok can be a significant discovery and promotion channel, and the available reports show relationships between its engagement and wider music activity. They do not show a guaranteed route from views to streams, chart success or an artist’s earnings.
