Themed resorts helped turn the Las Vegas Strip into a destination where the hotel itself was part of the show. Their replacement is not evidence that every themed casino is disappearing: the Tropicana was demolished in 2024, while the Mirage closed for a planned conversion to a Hard Rock property. Those different outcomes reflect a longer Strip tradition of reinvention.
How themed resorts helped remake the Strip
Las Vegas resorts have long sold more than rooms and gambling: they sell an experience. By the late 20th century, that idea was expressed at a much larger scale through destination resorts designed to make their identity visible in the architecture, landscaping and attractions.
The Mirage opened in 1989 with a Polynesian theme. The Associated Press described it as a property that ushered in the Strip megaresort era. Its significance was not just its decorative style; it helped establish the large, spectacle-driven resort as a defining form of modern Las Vegas. Themed presentation and megaresort scale became part of how the Strip competed for visitors.
That history makes the demolition of a resort more than a change of address on a map. A site can carry several versions of Las Vegas at once: an earlier theme, decades of operation, later redevelopment plans, and remnants preserved in photographs, records or signs.

What happened to the Tropicana?
The Tropicana closed in 2024 after a 67-year operating history, according to the Associated Press. The AP also reported on the property’s ties to the mob era; that is part of its historical context, not an explanation for the later demolition.
On October 9, 2024, the Tropicana’s two towers were imploded. Bally’s Corporation said the project would demolish 917,400 square feet across the 22-story towers and described the clearance as part of plans for an Athletics ballpark and Bally’s entertainment resort destination. Those were announced plans, not proof that the replacement projects were complete.

The implosion also became a public spectacle. “What Las Vegas has done, in classic Las Vegas style, they’ve turned many of these implosions into spectacles,” said Geoff Schumacher, historian and vice president of exhibits and programs at the Mob Museum, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Is the Mirage being demolished?
The Mirage is a different case from the Tropicana. It closed in July 2024 as part of a transition toward a Hard Rock property. The Associated Press reported that the original resort’s run was ending and described plans for a new resort, but that account does not establish the latest construction schedule or prove that the whole property was demolished.

It is therefore more accurate to describe the Mirage as closed for conversion and redevelopment, based on the 2024 reporting, rather than to call it a fully demolished casino. A rebrand or extensive renovation can change a resort dramatically without being the same outcome as razing its towers.
Not every lost Las Vegas hotel met the same end
The Strip’s history includes demolitions, fires and redevelopment. Treating all vanished casinos as examples of one process blurs important differences.

| Property | What happened | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Tropicana | Closed and its towers were imploded in 2024. | Bally’s presented a ballpark and entertainment resort as the planned replacement use; those plans should not be mistaken for completed construction. |
| The Mirage | Closed in July 2024 for a planned Hard Rock conversion. | The 2024 Associated Press report described a transition and plans for a new resort, not a confirmed full demolition. |
| The Dunes and the Sands site | The Dunes was demolished; the Sands site later became the Venetian development. | The Neon Museum’s historical accounts document these earlier cycles of replacement. |
| Moulin Rouge | The City of Las Vegas recounts its importance as an integrated hotel-casino and the later demolition of its remaining structures. | Its history is distinct from a planned resort implosion. |
| El Rancho Vegas | Opened in 1941 and burned in 1960. | Clark County’s account describes a fire loss, not a redevelopment implosion. |
The comparison shows why “closed,” “demolished,” “burned” and “converted” are not interchangeable. They describe different physical outcomes and different histories.

Las Vegas has repeatedly changed its outward identity, moving through themed attractions, large destination resorts and new redevelopment. The history supports a pattern of replacement and reinvention, but it does not establish one universal reason that resorts are demolished. Nor does it show that theming itself causes a property to be replaced.

In the Tropicana’s case, Bally’s explicitly connected the demolition to its announced ballpark and resort plans. For other properties, the reason and circumstances differ. Without evidence about each project, it would be misleading to reduce every loss to a single claim about economics, changing tastes or the end of themed casinos.
What survives after a casino disappears?
Buildings may be lost while other traces remain. The Neon Museum preserves and interprets signs associated with demolished properties, offering a way to encounter a portion of the Strip’s visual history outside its original setting. Archives, photographs and memorabilia can also document places that no longer stand.
For a broader architectural history, MIT Press’s catalog describes Stefan Al’s illustrated book The Strip: Las Vegas and the Architecture of the American Dream as covering the Strip’s architecture and transformations, including cycles of demolition and replacement. It provides historical context, rather than a current construction update on the Mirage or Tropicana.
