The application portal is now closed. Nine finalists have been announced, and the winners are scheduled to be named at a Rome ceremony on 29 October 2026.
Who runs the Awards, and what do they recognize?
The Awards are a recognition programme powered by the UN SDG Action Campaign, which is hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Their purpose is to recognize action connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), rather than to provide a general grant or open-ended funding competition. The 2026 edition is branded Heroes of Tomorrow: UN SDG Action Awards.
The SDGs are the United Nations’ goals for addressing global challenges through the 2030 Agenda. That broad context helps explain the Awards’ focus, but the Agenda itself does not set the Awards’ application rules. Applicants needed to use the 2026 award categories and process, not infer eligibility or judging requirements from the SDGs in general.
The public descriptions identify the kinds of action each category is intended to recognize. They do not establish a complete eligibility checklist or a numerical scoring formula. In particular, the published information does not give category-specific score weights, a judge-voting method, or a guaranteed threshold for reaching the finalist stage. The process can be explained from its published stages without assuming a selection formula that has not been disclosed.

Which 2026 category fits an entry?
The 2026 categories distinguish an individual leading action from initiatives whose principal contribution is creative influence or resilience. The category descriptions are the clearest public guide to where an applicant’s work belongs; they should not be treated as a promise that the judges use only one kind of evidence.

These distinctions suggest a practical starting point for choosing a category: identify whether the central subject is an individual’s leadership or an initiative, then ask whether the initiative’s main contribution is creative influence or building resilience. A project can touch more than one theme, but the published descriptions do not explain how to handle overlap or establish that an applicant could enter multiple categories. Nor do they support ranking categories by chances of winning.
For a strong, clear account, connect the work to the category’s stated purpose. For example, a creative project should make clear not only that it uses art or visual expression, but how that approach inspires action and produces measurable impact. A resilience initiative should make the circumstances it responds to and its results understandable. These are ways to communicate the public category descriptions; they are not additional official scoring rules.

How did the 2026 application and selection process work?
- Choose a category. Applicants matched their person or initiative to Changemaker, Creativity or Resilience, based on the published descriptions.
- Submit during the open call. The 2026 application period ran from 15 April through 31 May. The official FAQ says the portal is closed and late applications are not considered; an entry cannot now be submitted for this edition.
- Go through assessment and finalist selection. The official process describes internal assessment, notification and announcement of finalists, followed by judge review of finalist applications. The UN announced nine finalists on 6 October 2026.
- Finalists take part in a programme. Selected finalists are invited to a programme in Rome involving networking, coaching and capacity building ahead of the ceremony.
- Category winners are announced. As of 9 October 2026, the ceremony was scheduled for 29 October in Rome. The programme listed an online broadcast through UN Web TV and RAI.
Assessment and finalist selection are not described as a public points table. The available 2026 information does not provide a full scoring rubric, category-specific weights, or a particular voting formula. That means applicants and observers can understand the sequence, but cannot reliably calculate what score a project would need or claim that one criterion dominates another.

The nine finalists had been selected and announced by 6 October, but that announcement was not the same as announcing the category winners. As of the date of the latest cited 2026 information, the winners were still due to be announced at the ceremony.
What do finalists receive?
The official FAQ says one representative from each finalist initiative is invited to Rome for the finalist programme and ceremony, with travel costs covered by the UN SDG Action Campaign. The programme includes networking, coaching and capacity building, so finalist status brings participation as well as public recognition.

The FAQ also lists global visibility through the Campaign’s channels and media, plus a customized trophy for finalists and winners. The reviewed official information does not establish a cash prize. The award should therefore be understood as a recognition and finalist-development programme, not advertised as a cash award.
The one-representative travel arrangement is specifically described for each finalist initiative. It should not be generalized into a promise to cover travel for an entire team, nor does the public information cited here establish other travel arrangements or expenses.

The application total and geographic reach are figures attributed to the 2026 edition by the United Nations Sustainable Development announcement. For historical context only, a 2024 UN announcement reported 5,500 submissions from 190 countries. That release said entries were evaluated for impact, innovation and replicability by a high-level judging panel and technical review team. Those are historical details, not a substitute for the current 2026 category structure or a basis for claiming that the same evaluative process or criteria applied in 2026.

- For Changemaker: Who is leading the collective action, whom has that leadership brought together, and how does the action relate to justice, equality or peace?
- For Creativity: What creative, visual, artistic or innovative approach is being used, how does it inspire action, and what measurable impact can be shown?
- For Resilience: What conflict, inequality or climate-change context is being addressed, what does the initiative do, and what tangible results indicate that resilience is being built?
These questions are a way to make the work intelligible against the published category descriptions, not a substitute for the next edition’s application form. A future call may specify its own requirements, evidence, eligibility conditions and deadlines. Until those are published, it would be misleading to state a document checklist, promise an application route, or advise that late submissions will be accepted; for 2026, the official FAQ explicitly said late applications were not considered.
How to follow the ceremony and verify changing details
The 29 October 2026 ceremony in Rome and online broadcast through UN Web TV and RAI were scheduled details reported as of 9 October, not confirmation that the ceremony has already taken place. Readers should check the official Awards information and FAQ for any later changes to the event or broadcast. After the ceremony, those sources and the UN announcement channels are the places to look for confirmed winner information.
For a documentary audience, it is useful to separate three kinds of account: an initiative’s own description of its work, the Award’s published category description, and the UN’s confirmed announcements about selection and results.
