Season 7 finale was designed to work two ways: as an upbeat goodbye if the series ended, or as a hopeful bridge into another season. Executive producer Andrew Dettmann said the writers would not have changed the ending if they had known sooner that the show would continue. Season 8 did follow, but it became the series’ last season.
Was the Season 7 finale meant to be the series finale?
Yes, in the sense that it could provide closure if the show stopped there—but it was not written as a definitive ending. In an interview published May 17, 2024, showrunner Andrew Dettmann said the finale was meant to leave viewers with an optimistic sense that the team would keep serving Los Angeles, whether or not another season arrived. He said the writers had already been “kind of cheating in that direction,” so they would not have changed the episode if they had known earlier that Season 8 was coming. That dual purpose fit a season of upheaval. Hondo faced community backlash, the unit experienced friction, and Street and Luca departed. The finale, “Twenty Squad,” gave the team a common mission through a new threat, shifting the story toward cooperation rather than ending on the squad’s divisions. Dettmann described Hondo’s central challenge as belonging to his community while serving as a police officer, and trying to use both roles to bring people together. Parade’s May 17, 2024 interview
What did the finale resolve for 20 Squad?
The episode restored some stability without closing every question about the team. Deacon returned to 20 Squad, while Tan, Powell and Alfaro remained. Commander Hicks gave Hondo the latitude to select the sixth member, but Dettmann said the writers had not yet chosen who would fill that position when he spoke to TV Insider in May 2024. TV Insider

That open place was a practical continuation hook, while the team’s renewed focus offered an emotionally satisfying endpoint if there was no continuation. The finale therefore did not need to settle the squad’s long-term lineup to feel hopeful.
What did Dettmann expect from Season 8?
Dettmann called the next season “a little bit of a blank slate,” explaining that the writers had not planned ahead as far as they might have in earlier seasons. He expected them to build a new season arc for Hondo, returning to his concern for the community and the tension between “Black versus blue.” Parade

Parade reported in May 2024 that Season 8 had a 22-episode order. Dettmann said the writers expected to begin work shortly and hoped to build toward more seasons; that was his hope at the time, not confirmation of a later renewal. Parade

Season 8 became the final season, so the possibility of a longer continuation described in the 2024 interview did not come to pass. CBS Studios lists Season 8, Episode 22, “Return to Base,” as the series finale; it aired May 16, 2025. CBS Studios’ S.W.A.T. episode listing

Seen in retrospect, Season 7’s ending did what Dettmann said it was built to do: it left the audience with an uplifting sense of a functioning team and a future for Hondo, while remaining a plausible stopping point. Season 8 continued the story, then brought it to its actual conclusion.
