Rob Reiner said Meg Ryan proposed that Sally fake an orgasm in an incongruous place, Billy Crystal came up with the closing line, and Reiner’s mother, Estelle, delivered it. The film opened on July 21, 1989, so it is more than 37 years old as of October 7, 2026—not 36.
What happens in the deli scene?
Harry doubts Sally’s claim that women can convincingly fake an orgasm. To make her point, Sally stages one while they are eating in a crowded deli. After the performance, an older woman at a nearby table tells the server, “I’ll have what she’s having.” The joke lands because the woman treats Sally’s display as an enticing menu choice, while Harry is left to absorb the demonstration.

Where was the scene filmed?
The scene was filmed at Katz’s Deli on New York’s Lower East Side, according to the AFI Catalog. The real restaurant’s setting gives the performance a public, everyday backdrop rather than a private or theatrical one.
Who came up with “I’ll have what she’s having”?
Rob Reiner credited Billy Crystal with writing the line. The AFI Movie Club account says Crystal wrote it between rehearsals. Reiner later called it “the most famous line in the film, and one of the most famous lines in all of comedy films,” in an interview with the Library of Congress.

Who says the final line?
Estelle Reiner, Rob Reiner’s mother, delivers the punchline. Reiner said he already knew he wanted an older Jewish woman to say it, and cast his mother for the part. He recalled that Meg Ryan was initially nervous about performing the scene; after he acted it out to show her what he wanted, she performed it and Estelle delivered the final line. These are Reiner’s recollections, shared in the Library of Congress interview.
Why is the scene so memorable?
The scene turns a debate between two friends into a comic demonstration, then ends with a single line that reframes what the audience has just watched. Crystal’s punchline is brief, but its timing and the contrast between Sally’s performance and the older woman’s matter-of-fact response make it easy to remember and quote.

These are AFI’s institutional rankings, not audience-survey results.
How does the scene fit the film?
20th Century Studios lists the film’s U.S. release date as July 21, 1989, its runtime as 1 hour 36 minutes, and its rating as R. Rob Reiner directed it, Nora Ephron wrote it, and Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star as Harry and Sally, friends who worry that sex could complicate their relationship.

In the Library of Congress interview, Reiner recalled that the project grew from conversations with Ephron about whether men and women could be friends and whether sex would change that friendship. He said Ephron interviewed him and brought a woman’s perspective to the material; that is Reiner’s account of their collaboration, not a complete account of Ephron’s writing process.
