How did The Golden Girls finale end?
The two-part finale, “One Flew Out of the Cuckoo’s Nest,” aired on May 9, 1992. In the story, Dorothy and Lucas initially pretend they are getting married as a prank on Blanche. When Rose says she plans to move, Lucas drops the pretense and proposes to Dorothy for real. She accepts, marries him, and plans to move with him to Atlanta. Apple TV’s part-one listing and Hallmark Channel’s episode guide summarize the setup and proposal.
The goodbye is emotional because Dorothy’s departure changes the household, not because the friends cease to matter to one another. The Television Academy describes the women’s circle of friendship as a family, noting that only Dorothy and Sophia are related. That chosen-family perspective helps explain why the finale can end with a marriage and a move while still centering the bond among the four women. Television Academy series profile

#1 Best Overall
Rose Nylund
Rose says she plans to move, and that announcement becomes the turning point that prompts Lucas to reveal his real intentions and propose to Dorothy. The official summaries cited here do not identify where Rose plans to go or establish what happens to her after Dorothy leaves.
Blanche Devereaux
Blanche brings her visiting uncle Lucas into Dorothy’s orbit, hoping to leave him in Dorothy’s hands. Later, she joins Rose in saying a tearful goodbye to Dorothy. The official finale summaries do not give Blanche a new romance or a further personal-life outcome.
Rank #2
Sophia Petrillo
Sophia considers where she wants to live and makes a final decision in the second part. The official episode summaries confirm that she decides, but do not name the household or destination she chooses.
Why does Dorothy leave the series?
The finale gives Dorothy a new life with Lucas and a move away from Miami, while the farewells emphasize the close friendships that shaped the series. The Television Academy records 180 episodes and says NBC dropped the show from its prime-time lineup after the 1992 season. It also notes that Blanche, Rose, and Sophia continued in The Golden Palace, with Sophia later appearing occasionally on Empty Nest. Television Academy series profile
