Deadpool & Wolverine’s climax was not emotionally complete in its first assembly. Picture editor Shane Reid said it initially played like a music video: energetic, but unclear about what the characters stood to lose. The solution was to reshape the footage around the possibility of death, and to make the showdown pay off both Wade Wilson and Wolverine.
Why the first cut fell flat
In an io9 interview published August 14, 2024, Reid recalled that Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy had wanted Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” in the film from early on. Reid also explored Journey’s “Separate Ways” as a musical direction for the climax. But a strong song and escalating action did not, by themselves, make the sequence emotionally legible.
Reid described the initial version as “like just this music video that had nothing to it.” It built toward a major moment, he said, but “completely fell flat” because viewers could not yet feel the stakes. The problem was not simply pacing or spectacle: the sequence needed to clarify what the characters risked and why the audience should feel the cost.
Rebuilding the scene around what the characters could lose
Reid said the team went back to the central questions: “What is the core of this? What are we doing and what are the stakes and how are we going to show those stakes?” His starting point was a visual idea: show Wade losing his life. He was influenced by practical visual storytelling in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and by the image of a photograph in Back to the Future.

From there, he searched footage from the earlier Deadpool films as well as the current film for images that could make loss visible. Rather than relying only on new action in the power room, the edit could bring the audience into the characters’ memories and emotional histories. Reid later summarized the aim in a No Film School interview: editing was used to get inside the characters’ minds and draw out their stakes and desires as they accepted possible death. The emotional depth, he said, was not already present in the power-room footage; the team had to craft it in the edit.
Making the climax belong to both Deadpool and Wolverine
The ending also had to balance the two leads. Reid said it could not be only Deadpool’s emotional moment: “This has to be a moment about these two guys.” Each character’s journey needed to pay off in the same sequence.

For Wolverine, simply cutting in footage from Logan would have been wrong, Reid explained, because this Wolverine was not meant to be that version of the character. Instead, he and the team mined the film itself for material that could take on new meaning in the climax:
- A photograph moment involving Wolverine had been removed earlier for timing, then found a place in the finale.
- A line from X-23 had been trimmed and was available to help shape the emotional context.
- “I am the X-Man,” originally spoken in a scene with Cassandra, was moved to Wolverine’s acceptance of his fate.
These fragments let the sequence reveal thoughts and emotional connections beyond what the audience had seen in their original contexts. The aim was to deepen what viewers understood, not simply replay familiar moments.

How music, images, and silence shape the feeling
Reid described music as a partner to the images: it supports the sequence and adds emotional depth, but the edit still has to make the stakes readable. The shift from the first assembly to the finished climax was therefore not just a matter of choosing a more effective song. It involved selecting and repositioning footage so the music carried a story about what Wade and Wolverine might lose.
A different scene offers a useful glimpse of the same editorial judgment. After Wolverine’s speech in the van, Reid valued the pause rather than rushing straight into the next burst of action. In a September 2024 interview with The Credits, he said, “I love the silence after Hugh’s speech. It’s uncomfortable, and we let the audience sit in that discomfort for a minute.” That moment is not the climax itself, but it illustrates how restraint can give a performance room to register before the film changes gear.

A collaborative edit, not a single fix
Reid’s account centers on his search for images and lines, but the finished sequence came from a broader editorial process. CineMontage, the Motion Picture Editors Guild publication, describes close links between the film’s editing and production: the editors collaborated rapidly, tried alternatives, and fed editorial ideas back into production. That context supports a more accurate picture of the climax’s creation than a lone “eureka” decision. Its emotional shape emerged through iteration—testing how music, performance, reordered lines, and selected images could make the characters’ risks visible.
