It does not give him the approval or sense of worth he needs. That gap is the danger at the center of the season: he gains more freedom to act, but remains insecure and dissatisfied.
How does Homelander change in Season 4?
The change is political, not a cure for his personal insecurity. Amazon’s Season 4 setup describes Victoria Neuman as closer than ever to the Oval Office and secretly working with Homelander, who is consolidating power. The season comprises eight episodes, with its finale scheduled for July 18, 2024, in Amazon’s announcement: Amazon’s Season 4 announcement.

| Homelander is building influence with allies, including Neuman, to shape the government. | A figurehead president is elected, Homelander is effectively in charge, and the Boys are rounded up. |
| His political ambitions depend on others helping him consolidate power. | His position gives him far greater practical freedom to wield power against opponents. |
| Success might appear to promise recognition and status. | His success does not resolve his sense of inferiority or make him happy. |
The finale’s reversal is institutional: opponents are being suppressed and Homelander’s side has the upper hand. It is not a personal resolution. He can win control and still feel that the victory has not proved his worth.
Does Homelander take over America?
Season 4 ends on a cliffhanger that puts Homelander effectively in charge after a figurehead president is elected. The Boys are rounded up, making the finale a decisive turn in the struggle for political power rather than a completed account of everything Homelander will do with it. The Los Angeles Times’ July 18, 2024 interview with showrunner Eric Kripke discusses the finale and its election-and-coup storyline: Los Angeles Times interview with Eric Kripke and Antony Starr.

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
Later confirmation belongs to Season 5, not Season 4. Prime Video’s official Season 5 synopsis says Homelander controls America through fascist terror and imprisons dissenters in Freedom Camps: Prime Video’s Season 5 page. That synopsis confirms where the Season 4 cliffhanger leads, but those developments should not be mistaken for events shown in Season 4.
Why is Homelander still unhappy when he gets what he wants?
Kripke’s explanation is that Homelander knows he did not earn his success. In the Los Angeles Times interview, Kripke said, “Even if he’s literally king of the world, he’s going to feel inferior about it.” He also put the point bluntly: “It won’t make him happy. Spoiler alert: He’s still going to be miserable.” The analysis follows from that distinction: political dominance can remove practical restraints without healing the status wound that drives him.

Season 4 also returns Homelander to the lab where he was raised and experimented on. Kripke recalled actor Antony Starr’s suggestion that being back there would make Homelander revert to the child he had been: “So I think at times he’d be curious and at times he’d be vulnerable, at times he’d be genuinely emotional and then cruel.” The sequence makes room for vulnerability and cruelty in the same character; it does not excuse his actions or establish a clinical diagnosis. A 2025 TV Insider retrospective also discusses Kripke’s account of the lab episode: TV Insider on the lab episode.
What political parallels does the show make?
Kripke described the political storyline as drawing on references to Trump, malignant narcissism, and egomania, while cautioning against treating Homelander as a simple blond replica of a real politician. He called the story “our worst fear of a pushed version of society.” Those comments frame the season’s political context; Homelander remains a fictional character with his own history and psychology, not a one-to-one portrait of a real person.

Where does The Boys come from?
The television series adapts the comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, as the Associated Press notes: Associated Press on the comic behind the series. The comic is an option for readers curious about the source material, but it is a separate work and should not be assumed to follow the show’s exact plot.
