Those sources establish the encounter’s emotional purpose, but they do not verify that the trailer reproduces the animated film’s shots frame for frame.
What the trailer is recreating
Universal presents the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon as a live-action reimagining by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker associated with the animated trilogy. The studio describes the story as bringing Hiccup and Toothless to life, with their friendship at its center. Universal’s official trailer page identifies Cressida Cowell’s book series as an inspiration for the franchise; the books, animated films and live-action adaptation are distinct works.
In the live-action film, Mason Thames plays Hiccup, whose unlikely bond with Toothless is central to the story, according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Peacock’s official scene preview specifically describes Hiccup first extending a hand of trust and friendship to Toothless. That makes the meeting more than an introduction: it is the turning point where fear begins to give way to connection.
Does it match the animated encounter shot for shot?
The official descriptions establish the same core story beat—Hiccup’s first gesture of trust toward Toothless—but they do not document matching camera angles, gestures, edits, lighting or sound. Without checking the relevant footage in both films, it would be inaccurate to say that the trailer recreates a particular animated shot or sequence exactly.

A careful comparison should focus on what can be seen and heard in each version:
- First contact: What does Hiccup do to signal he is not attacking, and how does Toothless respond?
- Approach and pacing: How quickly does Hiccup move closer, and where does the scene pause?
- Framing: How do shot size and camera position shape the viewer’s sense of danger or vulnerability?
- Atmosphere: How do the setting, light, sound and score affect the shift from threat to trust?
These are useful points of comparison, not claims that the trailer matches the animated version on any of them. The strongest supported conclusion is about the scene’s purpose: both the franchise’s central friendship and Peacock’s description frame Hiccup’s trust as the key to the encounter.

Where the trailer fits in the film’s release
NBCUniversal reported that the trailer appeared during Super Bowl LIX in 2025; Universal’s official YouTube listing dates the published trailer to February 12, 2025. The film later received a 4K UHD and Blu-ray release with an August 12, 2025 street date, according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Universal Pictures At Home lists the film’s runtime as 2 hours 6 minutes.
Watching the full film alongside the animated version is the way to assess whether the encounter’s staging differs beyond the trailer’s presentation. The documented runtime and home-release information are available on Universal Pictures At Home’s film page.
