“Nightbird” was written by Nicks and Sandy Stewart, who was also her duet partner. In a later account reported by American Songwriter, Nicks said Stewart developed severe stage fright and could not go on. Nicks recalled Stewart saying, “She freaked out and had terrible stage fright, so she couldn’t do it.”
How Lori Perry stepped in
Nicks said Perry, her sister-in-law at the time, volunteered to take Stewart’s place. The decision came at the last minute: Nicks described it as happening “literally right before we went on.” She recalled Perry saying, “I’ll do it,” and then joining her for the song.

- Newly remastered version of Stevie Nick's Debut solo album, Bella Donna. Nicks joined producer Jimmy Iovine to begin recording songs for her solo debut, following the recording of Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk and subsequent tour. The 1981 album was quickly certified platinum thanks to Nicks classics like “Edge Of Seventeen,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and “Leather And Lace” (with Don Henley).
The retrospective report attributes the story to Nicks’ interview with PEOPLE. The episode index verifies that “Nightbird” was performed, but it does not document the backstage substitution; the account of why Stewart withdrew and Perry’s role comes from Nicks’ recollection.
