Steve Carell met Nancy Walls at Chicago’s Second City, where she was taking improv classes and he was teaching one. He has recalled being attracted to her but mistakenly thinking her quietness meant she disliked him. Years later, he described a hesitant, funny exchange that led to their first date.
They met in an improv class at Second City
After moving to Chicago to pursue comedy, Nancy Walls began taking classes at Second City and met Carell there, according to the institution’s biography of Walls. Carell gave the first-person version in a 2013 interview with The Guardian: Walls was in an improv class he taught, and he was immediately attracted to her.
His first impression did not go smoothly. Carell said he took her quietness as a sign that she disliked him, only to learn later that she was nervous and trying to appear cool. That small misunderstanding gives the story its gentle comic twist: the person he hoped to impress seemed, at first, impossible to read.
Carell’s reported account of asking her out
A March 2026 Reel Chicago report on Carell’s appearance on Good Hang with Amy Poehler recounts how the two circled around the idea of dating before he asked directly, “Do you wanna go out?” The report says they went out that night. It also says Walls was working as a waitress at a nearby bar called The Last Act.

The account is also consistent with the broader shape of the story: an attraction, an awkward pause, and a straightforward question at last.

Carell’s 2013 Guardian interview adds a more tender memory of their wedding day. He recalled feeling calm as Walls walked down the aisle, and certain that she was the right partner—someone who would have his back. His explanation for a lasting relationship was simple: “There’s no secret – I think you get lucky.”
