After Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at a Utah Valley University event in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025, social media carried condolences and calls to reject political violence alongside partisan blame, criticism of Kirk’s views, graphic video and false claims. The examples reported at the time show competing reactions—not a representative measure of what all users or the country believed.
What people said in the first hours
Early posts included prayers and condolences for Kirk’s wife and children, as well as condemnations of political violence. Former President Barack Obama cautioned against guessing at a motive: “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy,” Euronews reported.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote: “The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.” The Irish Times reported the post. President Donald Trump also posted a tribute on Truth Social, Euronews reported.
Other statements came from different political settings. ABC17/KMIZ reported that Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe condemned political violence and that a Turning Point USA chapter at the University of Missouri asked people to pray after Kirk was shot. The outlet also covered remarks by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani. These are selected examples reported by news outlets, not a complete inventory of reactions.

Condolence and condemnation appeared alongside partisan blame
Some users quickly turned to political accusations. Euronews reported that speculation—including descriptions of the shooter as a “liberal nut case”—circulated before authorities named a suspect. Trump blamed the “radical left,” and Elon Musk wrote on X, “The Left is the party of murder.” These were claims and political statements made amid uncertainty; they are not evidence establishing the shooter’s motive.
Other users discussed Kirk’s own views on guns. The Irish Times reported that a remark from a 2023 interview resurfaced after his killing: “It’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.” It was a quotation from an earlier interview, not a new post reacting to the shooting.

Graphic video spread across platforms
Associated Press reported on September 11 that graphic videos circulated almost immediately on X, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Truth Social. The videos included multiple angles, as well as slowed or looped versions. Traditional news organizations were generally cautious about showing the moment of impact, but users could encounter footage directly through social platforms.
AP’s report described the footage as watched by “Millions of people,” but the passage did not provide an underlying platform dataset or a separately attributed measurement. It should not be treated as a precise, independently verified count.

What platforms said at the time
According to AP’s September 11 account, YouTube said it was removing some graphic content when it lacked sufficient context and restricting some videos so they could not be viewed by users under 18 or people who were not signed in. YouTube told AP: “Our hearts are with Charlie Kirk’s family following his tragic death. We are closely monitoring our platform and prominently elevating news content on the homepage, in search and in recommendations to help people stay informed.”
AP reported that Meta’s rules did not prohibit posting videos like the shooting. The company applied warning labels and did not show the videos to users who said they were under 18; Meta referred AP to its violent and graphic content policies and offered no further comment. AP said an X representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. These details describe platform responses reported at the time, not necessarily current policy.

Early claims about the suspect were unreliable
False and misleading posts appeared within hours, AP’s September 13 fact-check reported. Examples included incorrect identifications of the suspect, old footage shared as if it were new, and unsupported claims about the suspect’s political affiliation.
After authorities publicly identified a suspect, AP reported that Utah voter records showed he was registered to vote but unaffiliated with either major party. AP also found false the claim that he belonged to the Democratic Socialists of America. The distinction matters: posts made before identification were speculation, while later reporting checked specific claims against available records. Neither partisan accusations made in the first hours nor an unaffiliated voter registration establishes a motive.

What these reactions can—and cannot—show
Contemporaneous coverage documents a range of responses: grief, prayers, rejection of political violence, partisan blame, discussion of Kirk’s positions, and the rapid circulation of graphic footage and misinformation. It does not provide a representative count of posts, a survey of users, or a measured share of public opinion. A handful of prominent posts can illustrate the arguments people encountered without showing how common any view was.
The scope of those examples is also uneven. One figure in the Congressional Record illustrates the reach of Turning Point USA: on September 18, 2025, Rep. Mark Green referred to “3,500-plus chapters” at universities, college campuses and high schools across the country. That is a statement in congressional remarks, not an independently audited count, and it does not measure online reaction.
