It brings together Kryst’s own manuscript and Simpkins’s account of her daughter’s struggles and the family’s loss. Simon & Schuster lists the book’s publication date as April 23, 2024—not a new 2026 release. View the publisher’s book details.
What the memoir covers
The publisher describes Kryst’s manuscript as a personal account of public milestones alongside private struggles. Simpkins continues the story, writing about mental illness, depression, and the aftermath of her daughter’s death. The book’s premise is not that public success explains or rules out private pain; it places both parts of Kryst’s life in view.
Kryst was crowned Miss USA in May 2019 and became an Extra correspondent in October 2019, according to her publisher biography. Those milestones provide context, not evidence about how she felt at any given time.
What the exclusive excerpt reveals
In an excerpt published by Oprah Daily on April 23, 2024, Simpkins writes from the perspective of a parent trying to support her daughter. She describes learning that helping did not mean being able to fix everything: “I realized then that what she needed was a supporter, not a savior.” Read Simpkins’s excerpt at Oprah Daily.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Simpkins also recounts an eight-day hospital stay for Kryst. She says an early draft of an Allure article included the reason for the stay, but Kryst chose not to disclose it in the published article. That distinction matters: Simpkins is describing what appeared in an early draft, not asserting that the published article revealed the reason.

The publisher says net proceeds from the book will support the Cheslie C. Kryst Foundation, described on its page as founded in her honor. This is the publisher’s stated arrangement; it does not establish the foundation’s current status or the amount of present-day proceeds. The publisher also calls the memoir a “New York Times Bestseller,” but does not provide a date, list, or rank on the page.

The memoir addresses suicide and mental illness through the experiences of Kryst and her mother. Its title and promotional framing should not be treated as a clinical explanation or as proof of a single cause of death. Simpkins’s excerpt offers a parent’s account of one aspect of their experience; it cannot stand in for every part of Kryst’s story.
