What was the SNL Property Brothers White House sketch?
Titled “White House Makeover,” the sketch aired in the November 1, 2025 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Miles Teller. Peacock’s official episode recap describes it as an HGTV-inspired political sketch: a “2025 refresh” of the White House built around the ballroom plan. Teller plays both Jonathan and Drew Scott, the Property Brothers; James Austin Johnson plays Donald Trump, and Chloe Fineman plays Melania Trump.
The renovation-show setup lets the sketch treat the residence as a client project, with the brothers pitching changes and Trump trying to evade the bill. The Los Angeles Times’ episode review describes the fictional clients as dissatisfied with a 55,000-square-foot, 132-room home and gives the sketch’s comic budget as “$350 million to infinity.” Those figures and the budget joke belong to the sketch’s setup; they should not be read as project specifications or verified costs.
The parody also folds in jokes about the government shutdown, with the brothers getting help from park rangers and astronauts, according to the Times review. In another punchline, Teller says, “They also paved the Rose Garden and turned it into what looks like outdoor seating at an Olive Garden.” That line is scripted dialogue, not a factual report about the garden. Peacock’s recap identifies the cast and links to the sketch. The doubling gives Teller the familiar two-host renovation-show dynamic while Johnson and Fineman play the fictional White House clients.
What real event supplied the sketch’s premise?
The premise was the demolition of the White House East Wing to make way for a ballroom project. The Associated Press reported on October 23, 2025, that the entire East Wing had been demolished. The wing had housed the first lady’s and staff offices, drawing rooms, visitor functions and tours, and spaces used for state dinners, receptions and other events.

The demolition was a reported event; the sketch’s renovation scenes and jokes are fictional. Teller’s line about Trump “clicking enlarge” while reviewing a ballroom plan is one example of the satire: “We showed Donald our plan for a ballroom that would match the current proportions, but he kept clicking enlarge.” CNN’s transcript attributes the line to Teller in character.
What was reported about the ballroom’s size and cost?
In its October 23, 2025 report, the AP described the planned ballroom as 90,000 square feet and said Trump then put its cost “in the neighborhood” of $300 million. The AP also noted earlier announced estimates of $200 million in July and $250 million the week before its report. These are dated reported estimates, not a final cost: the available reporting does not establish the project’s eventual price.

The scale drew competing responses. The AP reported that the National Trust for Historic Preservation raised concerns that the ballroom could overwhelm the Executive Mansion, which the AP described as 55,000 square feet. That is the Trust’s preservation concern as reported by the AP, not an uncontested technical finding. The administration offered a different rationale: White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the AP that architects and construction companies had advised that demolition was necessary for a modern, stable East Wing. Her statement was the administration’s explanation, not an independent determination that demolition was required.
