Costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. starts with the way people dress in everyday life, then reshapes those observations to serve a character and story. His work shows that designing for the screen is both imaginative and collaborative—and that it also demands practical skills, preparation and long hours.
How Pérez turns everyday clothing into character
In a February 28, 2023 interview with People Chica, Pérez describes watching how people dress as a starting point for costume design. “I will take photos of street people because fashion is led by regular people,” he says.
The goal is not to copy an outfit exactly. He reinterprets what he sees to express a character and the story, sometimes heightening reality so the clothing reads effectively on screen. A costume can suggest who someone is, how they want to be seen, or how they fit into the world of the film or show.
Why collaboration matters
Costume design is made in conversation with other creatives. Pérez points to his work with Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project as an example of how a shared interest in fashion can support a close collaboration. The designer’s ideas must work for the character while also serving the production’s larger vision.

What his work on Hocus Pocus 2 involved
For the sequel, Pérez aimed to honor the original film’s recognizable character designs while updating their construction, materials and details. In a Cinelinx interview published October 7, 2022, he discusses preserving familiar colors and silhouettes, researching 1650s clothing for period scenes, and using fabric and embellishment to communicate character.
He also describes coordinating design choices with the director and producer. The balance is specific to that production: audiences should recognize the characters, but the costumes still need to support the sequel’s story and visual world.

How Pérez found his way into costume design
Pérez has described his career as something he discovered rather than planned from the outset: “I think costumes found me.” A high-school counselor encouraged him to take a sewing class. He later studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and gained costume-workshop experience on Titanic.
A Los Angeles Times career explainer published January 25, 2022 adds context to his early opportunity: a conversation about sewing work helped him get a start in a costume department. It is an example of how a practical skill can open a door, not a guarantee of a particular career path.

How to prepare for costume work
Pérez’s advice is straightforward: “Take a basic sewing class, learn to sew.” Sewing gives aspiring designers a foundation in how garments are made and altered—useful knowledge whether they pursue further study, workshop work or another route into the industry.
He also urges people to build their qualifications before they reach college or a film set. His standard is: “Be the best, most qualified candidate in the room.” In practice, that means developing relevant skills early and being ready to contribute when an opportunity appears. The physical demands behind the creative work
Pérez enjoys the variety and changing creative problems of costume work, but describes demanding conditions as part of his own experience: very early call times and days that can run 14 hours. Those details come from his account in People Chica’s 2023 interview; they should not be read as a universal schedule for every costume designer or production.
