Ron Howard has spoken about The Andy Griffith Show with affection and gratitude. In a 2012 reflection published by TV Guide after Andy Griffith’s death, Howard wrote, “Well, I can’t imagine what my life would have been like without The Andy Griffith Show.” He also credited Griffith’s talent, creative instincts and work ethic with making the series a “unique professional experience.”
What Ron Howard said about the show
Howard’s clearest public statement is a retrospective, not a recent interview: in 2012, he wrote about the people who had played television fathers to him and remembered his years as Opie Taylor. He described the show as an important part of his life and praised Griffith’s contribution to the working environment.
“Andy’s particular talents, along with his creative instincts and work ethic, combined to offer all of us a unique professional experience.”
Those are Howard’s words in his TV Guide reflection. They support a picture of respect and appreciation for Griffith, without requiring assumptions about private feelings or suggesting that every part of growing up as a child actor was easy.

What it was like for Howard to play Opie
Howard played Opie Taylor, Sheriff Andy Taylor’s son, from 1960 to 1968, credited as Ronny Howard. The Los Angeles Times reports that he was six when the series began; he was five when the pilot aired in 1959. The part therefore occupied a substantial stretch of his childhood.
In a 2013 BAFTA event transcript, Howard recalled that the cast was invited to stay after script read-throughs to discuss the material, and that he was included in those conversations even when he was six. His recollection presents the set as a collaborative workplace where a young performer could observe how scripts and performances were discussed.

The BAFTA transcript records Howard’s account of that process. The Television Academy Foundation’s oral-history archive also indexes his discussion of his first dialogue contribution, Opie’s development, Griffith, castmates and his father’s coaching.
How his family supported his choice to act
A 2025 Woman’s World article attributes to Howard the recollection that he enjoyed acting and felt capable at it, while his parents repeatedly told him he did not have to continue and was not acting for their sake. The article also reports that director Bob Sweeney accepted a line rewrite Howard suggested because he thought a child would not say the line as written.

These details come through later secondary reporting, rather than the 2012 TV Guide reflection. The Television Academy archive is a useful place to explore Howard’s own oral-history interview, including topics concerning his parents and his father’s role as acting coach; the specific line-rewrite anecdote should be understood as Woman’s World’s report of his recollection.

Howard’s accounts support a warm view of the show as formative work: he valued Griffith, remembered being included in creative discussions and described a family that supported his autonomy. They do not establish that his childhood acting experience was effortless, nor do they prove that this one series alone determined his later career as a director. The more careful conclusion is that The Andy Griffith Show gave him early exposure to collaborative creative work, which he later remembered with gratitude.
