Devised and directed by Jason Reitman, Home Movie: The Princess Bride brought performers together through scenes they recorded separately at home. It was a charity tribute to the original, not a replacement adaptation.
What was Home Movie: The Princess Bride?
It was a chapter-by-chapter recreation of Reiner’s film, made by actors recording their parts at home and released in short installments on Quibi. The project began with a question Reitman said he asked himself after California’s stay-at-home order: could an entire movie be remade at home? He contacted performers, and their separate recordings were assembled into the film.
The deliberately improvised style was central to the idea. Participants used the props, costumes and other materials they had on hand—including pets—rather than trying to reproduce a conventional film set. Reitman encouraged them to embrace mistakes and the homemade feel. As he put it, “It’s better to have an umbrella than a sword.” (Vanity Fair, June 2020)
How did it become a miniseries?
Quibi released the project as short chapters beginning June 29, 2020, with installments rolling out over roughly two weeks. That chapter-based release made it a miniseries in form, though its purpose and production were unlike a conventional serialized drama: it was a pandemic-era fan tribute assembled from home recordings. Why was it connected to World Central Kitchen?
Quibi donated $1 million to World Central Kitchen in connection with the project, according to contemporaneous reporting by Vanity Fair and the Los Angeles Times. Vanity Fair described that donation as equivalent to approximately 100,000 meals. Those figures describe the reported donation and its estimated meal equivalent—not money raised directly by viewers or a project-specific count of meals delivered. (Vanity Fair; Los Angeles Times)
Reitman later described the charitable choice as “a very fast decision to do good based on us making these homemade videos,” in a follow-up interview with Vanity Fair. (Vanity Fair, 2021)

What was the Reiner family’s role?
Rob Reiner, who directed the original movie, also appeared in the home movie. Its closing bookend paired him with his father, actor and comedian Carl Reiner. Carl’s appearance became his final screen performance; he died days after recording it, according to Vanity Fair’s 2021 report. (Vanity Fair)
That family moment gave the project a personal connection to the original beyond Rob Reiner’s role as its director. In 2020, he reflected on the film’s multigenerational audience: “kids who saw it when they were eight or nine years old have kids that age now, and they’re seeing it and liking it.” (Vanity Fair)

Can you watch the home movie now?
Its current legal availability is not established by the available reporting. In 2021, Vanity Fair described it as difficult to find after Quibi shut down and reported that it was not included in the bundle of Quibi content acquired by Roku. That is a historical account of access at the time, not confirmation of its status today. (Vanity Fair)
The home movie and the original feature are separate works: the former is a short-chapter home-recorded tribute; the latter is Reiner’s 1987 film. Anyone seeking the original should check current local listings, since availability varies by market and service.
