Emily Maynard said losing her fiancé, NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, left “a fear inside of my soul” that she did not think she would ever shake. She also said she had moved past the loss while acknowledging it would remain part of everyday life. Her account holds both truths together: grief endured, and her daughter Ricki became a meaningful connection to her father.
What happened to Ricky Hendrick and Emily Maynard?
Hendrick died in a plane crash on October 24, 2004, while he and Maynard were engaged. Maynard was 18 when they became engaged, ABC News reported in a 2016 interview. Days after his death, she learned she was pregnant; she named their daughter Ricki.
Maynard also spoke about the painful detail of their final exchange. She had previously described “I love you” as her last words to Hendrick, but told ABC News that their actual last exchange was an argument: “We were mad at each other. And it didn’t end well.” She added, “I had no idea that that would be the last time I would see him.”
How did the loss affect Maynard?
In remarks from her 2012 Bachelorette introduction, later reproduced by Bachelor Nation, Maynard said: “Losing Ricky put a fear inside of my soul that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake.” She went on to say, “I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I’ve moved past it. It’s always going to be a part of my everyday life.”

Those statements are not a claim that grief was over or that it left her unchanged. Maynard described a lasting fear and an enduring place for the loss in her life, while also saying she had moved forward. She called Ricki “a reminder of what I don’t have, but it’s a good reminder,” adding that her daughter sometimes did things that reminded her of her father.
How did Ricki’s birth figure into her story?
Maynard described a period of acute despair after the crash, telling ABC News, “For days after the crash, I wish I’d died, too.” She also said she looked forward to Ricki’s birth. The baby was “kind of my light at the end of the tunnel,” and Maynard described the day as “the day I got a piece of Ricky back.” Her comments frame Ricki not as a replacement for Hendrick, but as a source of hope and a continuing bond with him.

What did Maynard say about life after the loss?
In a 2016 ABC News interview, Maynard discussed her memoir, I Said Yes: My Story of Heartbreak, Redemption and True Love, as well as becoming more private after relationship difficulties and public scrutiny. She said she looked inward to her relationship with God and met her eventual husband, Tyler Johnson, at church. These are parts of her later life, not evidence that faith erased the earlier loss.
