How Raygun’s ‘Kangaroo’ Moves Became an Olympic Internet Sensation

Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s kangaroo-like routine made her a global Olympic meme. Here is what happened, how she qualified, what “no votes” really meant, and why the backlash and LA28 controversy require context.

Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s kangaroo-like hop turned an Olympic breaking routine into one of Paris 2024’s defining internet moments. She did not win a medal—and “zero points” is not an accurate description of how breaking was judged—but her performance exposed the gap between a new Olympic audience, a culture-rooted discipline and the internet’s appetite for instantly recognizable spectacle.

The performance that became an Olympic internet phenomenon

Rachael “Raygun” Gunn did not win a medal in Paris. Instead, the Australian breaker became one of the most recognizable figures of the 2024 Games after a routine featuring a kangaroo-like hop, floorwork and deliberately unconventional gestures spread across social media.

The clips were funny to many viewers, confusing to others and deeply uncomfortable for the breaking community. They also encouraged a misleading shorthand: that Raygun simply “scored zero” at the Olympics after somehow being selected through a rigged process. The fuller story is more complicated. Gunn qualified through an official Oceania championship, competed under breaking’s comparative judging system and then became the focus of a backlash that mixed sports criticism, cultural arguments, memes, misinformation and harassment.

Who is Raygun?

Raygun is the competition name of Rachael Gunn, an Australian breaker and academic. The Australian Olympic Committee identified her as the first woman to represent Australia in Olympic breaking.

Her route to Paris was unusual in another sense: she combined university and teaching responsibilities with serious training. Breaking was making its Olympic debut at Paris 2024, so even viewers who follow the Games closely were encountering its competitive format for the first time.

The women’s competition was called the B-Girls event. Sixteen competitors took part, and the contest was organized around battles rather than a conventional event in which every athlete receives a single numerical score.

How did Raygun qualify for the Olympics?

Gunn won the B-Girl competition at the QMS 2023 WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney on October 27, 2023. The World DanceSport Federation reported that the victory gave her direct access to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her WDSF athlete record lists the continental championship as a first-place result worth 1,000 ranking points.

That qualification route became the subject of online conspiracy theories after her Paris performance went viral. The Australian breaking organization AUSBreaking said the selection event was open to interested competitors in the Oceanic region and was conducted under WDSF-aligned rules. Its account described a panel of nine international adjudicators, along with a head judge and a chairperson. It also said Gunn and Jeff Dunne emerged as the top performers through their battles that day.

A separate AUSBreaking clarification addressed claims that Gunn’s husband and coach had influenced the result. According to the organization, he was not a member of the selection panel or judging committee. The WDSF likewise described the Oceania qualifier as legitimate and supervised within the established international structure.

Those statements document the qualification process and reject the “inside job” narrative. They do not amount to an independent audit of every aspect of Australian breaking administration, but there is no basis in the supplied record for repeating the claim that Gunn’s Olympic place was secretly arranged.

What happened in Paris?

Gunn competed in the B-Girls round-robin stage on August 9, 2024. She faced three opponents and lost all three battles. She received no judge votes in those matchups.

That last sentence is more accurate than the familiar claim that she received “zero points.” Olympic breaking used comparative judging. Judges evaluated two breakers against each other across several criteria and voted for the athlete they considered stronger in each area. The WDSF cautioned that receiving few or no votes does not mean an athlete accumulated a conventional numerical score of zero, as might happen in athletics, diving or a judged event with a points total.

In practical terms, Gunn was not selected as the winner in any of her three battles. But “no votes” describes the result more precisely than “zero points,” which can give readers the wrong impression about how the event worked.

What were the “kangaroo” moves?

One section of Gunn’s routine included a movement that viewers widely described as a kangaroo hop or “kangaroo move.” It was immediately legible as an Australian reference, and that helped make the clip exceptionally easy to recognize and remix. A kangaroo-like gesture is understandable to a global audience in a way that a technically difficult but unfamiliar movement may not be.

The moment also collided with the formality of the Olympic setting. Many people were seeing breaking for the first time, while Gunn presented a highly individual routine rather than a sequence designed to resemble the mainstream image of breakdancing. She later said that she wanted to represent Australia and bring originality to her performance. That is her explanation of the routine, not proof that every viewer, breaker or judge interpreted it in the same way.

“Kangaroo move” is a media description, not an established technical name that Gunn invented or a recognized breaking technique that judges specifically penalized. The routine was one competitor’s Olympic set; it should not be treated as a summary of what breaking looks like at its highest level.

Why did the routine go viral?

Several ingredients came together:

  • Instant visual recognition: the kangaroo-like movement gave the performance an obvious Australian identity.
  • A new Olympic discipline: breaking had never appeared at the Games before, so much of the audience did not know its vocabulary or judging conventions.
  • Short-form video: a distinctive few seconds could circulate without the context of the full battle.
  • A clash of expectations: some viewers expected a familiar idea of “breakdancing,” while Gunn’s routine emphasized an idiosyncratic style that many found surprising.
  • The Olympic meme cycle: unusual moments from the Games are quickly copied, parodied and detached from their original setting.

The reaction was not one thing. Some people were joking about the routine. Some were making ordinary arguments about technique or competitive suitability. Others were criticizing whether the performance reflected the culture and standards of breaking. A further group spread unsupported claims about Gunn’s qualification and personal relationships. Some of the response became targeted abuse rather than commentary about sport.

Why did the performance provoke a cultural debate?

Breaking grew out of hip-hop culture and has its own history, vocabulary, community standards and ideas about credibility. It is not simply a generic dance category inserted into an Olympic timetable.

Olympic competition, however, requires an internationally understandable framework. In Paris, judges compared breakers using a five-criteria system that accounted for elements such as technique, vocabulary, originality, execution and musicality. A battle-based form was therefore being translated into a codified international sport without eliminating the importance of individual expression.

That translation creates tension. A system designed to make judging consistent may look formalized to a culture that values improvisation, musical response and authenticity. At the same time, a casual audience unfamiliar with breaking may mistake a style they dislike for a lack of technical skill, or assume that an unconventional routine represents the whole discipline.

The most responsible reading of the Raygun episode holds both facts together: her Olympic performance was open to criticism, and breaking deserved to be understood on its own terms rather than reduced to a viral joke.

What was the controversy about her selection?

After the Olympic clips spread, online posts alleged that Gunn had been given the Australian place because of her relationship with her husband, who was also her coach. The documented statements from AUSBreaking and the WDSF contradict the central version of that claim: they say the qualifier was an open regional event, that international adjudicators were involved and that her husband was not on the selection or judging panel.

It is important not to turn the rebuttal into a broader claim than the evidence supports. Official statements establish how the organizations say the event was structured and who was involved. They do not require every critic to have acted maliciously, nor do they prove that every discussion about national selection was unreasonable. But repeating an unsupported corruption allegation as fact is not justified.

What happened to Raygun after Paris?

Gunn apologized for the backlash directed at the breaking community and described the online response as devastating. In November 2024, she said she would no longer compete at the elite level, although she intended to continue breaking recreationally.

She explained that the prospect of being filmed, scrutinized and judged through the lens of the Olympic controversy had affected her decision. That distinction matters: stepping away from elite competition was not the same as abandoning breaking altogether.

There is also a record-keeping complication. A later WDSF athlete database display showed an active license and a competition entry for January 2026. That appears inconsistent with the November 2024 report, but a database entry alone does not establish that Gunn returned to regular elite competition. The safest description is that she publicly announced her withdrawal from elite competition in 2024, while a later database record suggests some continued administrative or competitive activity.

Did Raygun’s performance remove breaking from the 2028 Olympics?

No. Breaking was not included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic program, but that decision was made in October 2023—before the Paris Games and before Gunn’s performance became a global story.

The Los Angeles program selected baseball and softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash instead. The WDSF continued to advocate for breaking’s Olympic future and raised the possibility of later inclusion. Whatever one thinks of the Paris competition or the internet reaction, Raygun’s routine did not cause breaking to be excluded from LA28 because the relevant program decision predated the event.

What Raygun’s viral moment really revealed

Raygun became famous because a few seconds of movement were easy to recognize and difficult for an unprepared audience to categorize. But the story is not simply about an athlete who “went viral after scoring zero.” It is about the collision of a young Olympic discipline, a culture-based art form, an unfamiliar judging system and an internet that rewards instantly legible spectacle.

Gunn’s performance can be questioned. The judging result can be reported plainly. The selection process can be examined without inventing a conspiracy. And the abuse that followed can be condemned without pretending that all criticism was harassment.

That more careful account is less convenient than the meme, but it explains why the Raygun episode lasted far beyond the original battle: it turned one unconventional routine into a debate about who gets to define sport, culture and legitimacy online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Raygun score zero at the Olympics?

No. She lost all three of her round-robin battles and received no judge votes, but breaking did not use a conventional accumulated points score. Judges compared competitors and voted for the breaker they considered stronger across the event’s criteria.

How did Raygun qualify for the Paris Olympics?

Gunn won the B-Girl competition at the QMS 2023 WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney on October 27, 2023. The WDSF reported that the victory gave her direct access to Paris 2024.

Was Raygun’s Olympic selection rigged?

No documented evidence in the supplied record supports that claim. AUSBreaking said the qualifier was open to interested competitors in the Oceanic region, used WDSF-aligned rules and involved nine international adjudicators. It also said Gunn’s husband and coach was not on the selection or judging panel.

Did Raygun cause breaking to be removed from the 2028 Olympics?

No. The decision not to include breaking in the Los Angeles 2028 program was made in October 2023, before the Paris Olympics and before Gunn’s routine went viral.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s kangaroo-like Olympic routine became a global meme after she lost all three of her Paris 2024 battles, but “zero points” is an imprecise description of breaking’s comparative judging system. She qualified through a documented 2023 Oceania championship, and official Australian and WDSF statements rejected claims that the selection was rigged. Her later decision to step away from elite competition and breaking’s absence from LA28 are separate developments—not evidence that her viral performance caused the sport’s Olympic exclusion.
