Donna and Ed Kelce say they remained together while raising Jason and Travis Kelce because separating would have made the practical work of parenting much harder. Their explanation appears in Kelce, the 2023 Prime Video documentary about Jason Kelce’s NFL career, family, and decision about his future in football.
Why Donna and Ed Kelce stayed together
The documentary-related account presents the decision primarily as a parenting arrangement. Donna and Ed had recognized that their marriage was difficult, but continuing to function as a family unit made it easier to coordinate childcare, travel, activities, and the everyday support their sons needed.
That distinction matters. The available reporting attributes the decision to Donna and Ed’s own explanation; it does not establish that they had romantically reconciled or that the marriage had returned to the way it was earlier in their relationship. Their story is better understood as two parents continuing to work together under one family structure while raising their children.

It is also too broad to say, without qualification, that they lived continuously in the same home for every year that followed. What the documentary and related reports establish is that they chose to remain together as parents during Jason and Travis’s formative years because separating would have created additional logistical and emotional complications.
A roughly 25-year marriage
According to relationship timelines reported by Us Weekly, Donna and Ed met in the late 1970s, married, and had Jason in 1987 and Travis in 1989. They remained together for approximately 25 years before separating after their sons’ formative years.
Several secondary accounts describe the couple as agreeing to postpone divorce until after their sons completed college. However, an exact legal divorce date has not been established by a primary court record or an equally authoritative source in the available reporting. The careful description is therefore that Donna and Ed separated after roughly 25 years of marriage and after their sons’ college years—not that a specific divorce date can be confirmed.

What the documentary is about
Kelce is not solely a relationship documentary about Donna and Ed. Prime Video lists it as a 2023 documentary running approximately 1 hour and 42 minutes, with Amazon Studios identified as the studio. Jason Kelce, Travis Kelce, Kylie Kelce, Donna Kelce, and Ed Kelce are among the people credited in the listing.

It follows his relationship with his brother Travis, family events, the launch of the brothers’ New Heights podcast, and the career decision Jason ultimately faced. Donna and Ed’s account adds family history and context to that larger story rather than serving as the film’s only subject.

Donna Kelce’s place in the family story
Donna is the mother of Jason and Travis, whose careers made the Kelce family unusually prominent in both sports and entertainment coverage. Ohio University identifies Donna as a 1974 graduate with a degree in radio and television. She later became widely recognized by football audiences as her sons reached the NFL.
She and Ed have also appeared in the family’s own media orbit. An official episode listing for New Heights identifies both parents as guests in an episode discussing the Kelce family and the brothers’ football story. That gives audiences another first-party setting for hearing the family discuss its history, although the documentary remains the source connected to the disclosure about staying together while raising the boys.
Donna’s later public profile—including her inclusion in Glamour’s 2024 Mothers of the Year package—helps explain why a personal family account from the film received broad attention. That recognition came after the documentary’s 2023 release and should not be treated as part of the film’s original publication context.

The important qualification
The headline “stayed together for their sons” can easily be reduced to a claim that Donna and Ed remained happily married. Their account is more complicated and more practical than that. They describe maintaining a workable parenting partnership despite problems in the marriage, choosing stability and coordination while Jason and Travis were growing up.
That does not make their experience a universal model, nor does it reveal every private detail of their relationship. It does show why the family’s explanation is significant: a marriage and a parenting partnership are related, but they are not always the same thing. In the Kelce family’s telling, continuing to operate together as parents was the choice that best fit their circumstances at the time.
