Randy Savage’s role as Bonesaw McGraw in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man is associated with a serious, lasting neck problem—but the available accounts do not establish that filming ended his wrestling career. His ring career had begun in 1973, and WWE’s biography places his departure from the ring after his four-year WCW period, before the film’s release. The injury story comes from a later account of his brother Lanny Poffo’s recollection, not from a medical report or a statement by Savage.
What happened during the Spider-Man scene?
Savage played Bonesaw McGraw, a wrestler who faces Peter Parker in the film’s cage-match sequence. WWE spells the character’s name “Bone Saw McGraw”; the Television Academy uses “Bonesaw McGraw.” A behind-the-scenes segment described on the film page features Savage, Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi discussing how the cage-match scene was constructed: film page.
In a retrospective, Bleacher Report says Savage insisted on doing his own stunts. Near the end of the cinematic match, he was monkey-flipped onto his head. The report says the stunt required “numerous takes,” but does not give a count. Those details are reported recollections, not independently verified production or medical records: Bleacher Report’s retrospective.
What did Lanny Poffo say about Savage’s neck?
Bleacher Report attributes the account to Savage’s brother, Lanny Poffo. He recalled that Savage needed physical therapy after the stunt and that his movement seemed changed afterward. “He needed a lot of physical therapy,” Lanny says. “But he was never the same. Instead of turning his neck to see you, he turned his torso.”

That is a family member’s recollection reproduced in a retrospective. It supports saying Savage had lasting neck problems after the filming incident, as remembered by his brother; it does not establish a diagnosis, the precise severity of an injury, or that the stunt made him unable to wrestle.
Did the role end Savage’s wrestling career?
The timeline does not support the title’s literal cause-and-effect claim. WWE says Savage began wrestling in 1973 and left the ring after his four-year WCW period. Its biography does not name a precise final-match date. Since Spider-Man was released in 2002, the account places his departure from the ring before audiences saw him as Bonesaw McGraw: WWE’s Randy Savage biography.

Bleacher Report’s retrospective says that by 2005 Savage was finished with the wrestling business, aside from a brief series of TNA appearances. That later status does not show that the film injury caused his earlier departure. Nor does the account establish whether the neck problem influenced his subsequent wrestling appearances or his decision to stop.
Why WWE’s “career-ending match” is not his retirement date
WWE describes Savage’s WrestleMania VII match in 1991 as a “Career-Ending Match.” In wrestling, that phrase describes the match’s storyline stakes: Savage returned to the ring afterward. It should not be read as evidence that his wrestling career actually ended in 1991—or as proof that the Spider-Man stunt later ended it.

What the record does—and does not—show
- Established: Savage played Bonesaw McGraw in the 2002 Spider-Man, and a retrospective attributes a lasting neck problem after a stunt to his brother’s recollection.
- Not established: A medical diagnosis, a precise number of stunt takes, or proof that the role ended Savage’s career or forced his retirement. The cited accounts do not include a first-person explanation from Savage, a production record, or a direct account from Raimi tying the incident to a career decision.
The Television Academy’s obituary describes Savage’s acting and voice-over work as following the end of his wrestling career and identifies his Spider-Man character as Bonesaw McGraw. It reports that he died in 2011, aged 58: Television Academy obituary.
