That is a design aim, not proof that audiences worldwide have embraced it. In a GamesBeat interview, Lilith Games and Farlight Games chief product officer Xiaodong Tian explained how the team connects the art to gameplay, iterates with feedback, and thinks about familiarity and novelty.
What “Magical Storybook” means
Asked to describe AFK Journey’s art, Tian said, “We’ve been trying to give it a name, and internally we often refer to it as the ‘Magical Storybook’ style.” The phrase is the team’s descriptive label, not an established genre category. It points to a visual identity that draws on anime and cartoon fantasy but is intended to serve the atmosphere and pace of the game.

“We want the visual style to convey a sense of casualness and leisure, just like the gameplay,” Tian said. In this account, the art is not merely decoration: its tone is meant to make sense alongside the play experience.
How the art connects to play
Tian said the team wanted to make Esperia feel more dynamic, with engaging storylines and richer character backgrounds. He described art and writing teams joining early discussions about character design and world-setting, with UI/UX involved early in conversations about functionality. That collaboration was intended to keep characters, environments, interface, and play working together rather than developing as separate layers.

When a striking effect gets in the way
Tian gave the example of an elaborate maze transition that looked impressive but made the experience tedious. The team simplified it. He also described using a “rolling log” visual effect to preserve a top-down view while making exploration feel smoother. These examples illustrate the trade-off the team says it considered: a visual flourish is useful only when it supports the player’s experience. They are examples from Tian’s account, not independently reported usability-test results.
How the team described its iteration process
Tian said the developers spent around three years pursuing the desired style while listening to player feedback and observing data. He also said AFK Journey received more than half a year of updates before its official release. These are his descriptions in the interview, not independently audited development timelines; the pre-release update period should not be confused with the total time spent developing the game.

He described weekly community meetings, staff collecting player suggestions, and designers discussing issues that drew particular interest. The interview does not say how many suggestions the team adopted or quantify their effects. It presents feedback as part of the studio’s process, rather than as evidence that a specific change produced a measured outcome.
Familiar fantasy, with room for novelty
Tian said the team began with a Western-fantasy worldview and cartoon style, then added its own interpretations and innovations. He summarized the intended balance as “70% familiar” and “30% novelty,” saying, “Then, we added our own interpretations and innovations, gradually finding a balance where Western players feel both familiarity and novelty.”

The percentages are an illustrative heuristic from Tian, not a measured formula, survey finding, or rule for player preference. The explanation is about the developers’ rationale: recognizable fantasy elements may provide an entry point, while the studio’s own choices give the game a distinct identity. The interview does not establish how players in different regions actually responded.
What the interview does—and does not—show about global appeal
The GamesBeat interview, published June 2, 2024 and updated June 18, 2025, frames the art direction as an effort to appeal beyond a single audience. Tian described AFK Journey as having a global audience, but supplied no regional player counts, audience breakdown, or study measuring the style’s reception across countries. His account therefore supports a description of the design goal, not a conclusion that the style has succeeded globally.

Tian also reported that about 190 full-time employees were working on the project at the time of the 2024 interview, with support from other company departments. That is a dated staffing estimate, not a current headcount.

In the interview, AFK Journey was described as a free game for Windows PC, iOS, and Android. Tian said the team intended to continue developing it with new maps, stories, characters, activities, and modes. New characters and seasonal content can create opportunities to extend or refine an art direction, but the interview’s plans and cadence are statements made at the time—not a verified current release schedule.
The interview is a written GamesBeat Q&A by Dean Takahashi with Tian, conducted through a translator and edited by GamesBeat. Its value is the executive’s direct explanation of the art philosophy and process; it is not an independent assessment of the game’s visual quality or international reception.
