Queen Elizabeth II’s death led Netflix to pause The Crown’s Season 6 filming and prompted creator Peter Morgan and executive producer Suzanne Mackie to rethink the emotional shape of the finale. But the drama’s story still ends in 2005: it does not depict the Queen’s death in 2022. Season 5 ultimately premiered on November 9, 2022, as planned.

Did filming stop after the Queen died?

Yes. On September 9, 2022, Peter Morgan said he expected filming to stop as a mark of respect. Netflix later confirmed the suspension of Season 6 production, as reported by ITV News and The Guardian.

Morgan described the series as “a love letter to her” and said, “I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.” The pause was a production decision; it did not mean the story would extend to the Queen’s death.

Was Season 5 delayed?

No delay is established. When the Queen died, Season 5 was being filmed, and contemporary reporting said it was unclear whether its release plans would change. Netflix’s October 31, 2022 interview with Morgan gave November 9 as the premiere date, and Season 5 debuted that day. The uncertainty in September was not confirmation of a postponement.

Did the Queen’s death change the finale?

It affected the finale’s emotional framing, according to Morgan and Mackie, though the season’s story still concludes in 2005. In a Netflix Tudum retrospective published March 5, 2024, Morgan said, “Elements of the final episode were always in my mind, but then events overtook us.” He added, “The queen died and I had to somehow address that as well.”

Mackie said the episode “took on something else when the queen died.” She explained that the event influenced and altered its emotional landscape. The finale’s storyline centers on planning for a funeral, but it does not show the Queen’s 2022 death or move the drama’s timeline forward to it.

Did The Crown show the Queen’s death?

No. Season 6 ends the series’ narrative in 2005, 18 years before Elizabeth II died in 2022. The Queen’s death shaped how the creators approached the finale, but it is not an event depicted in the show.

Did viewers return to the series after her death?

TIME reported that, in the week after the Queen’s death, Season 1 ranked third on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Watched list, with 40.8 million hours streamed. That figure describes reported viewing of Season 1 during that short period; it is not a total for all six seasons or evidence of a lasting audience trend. TIME’s October 21, 2022 report gives the ranking and viewing-hours figure.
