Designers Lizz Luce and Mitch Monson developed the glyph from a brief drawing on the astrological signs for Mars and Venus; Prince chose the form. His 1993 name change came during a dispute with Warner Bros., but it did not release him from his contract.
How the Love Symbol took shape
In 1992, Prince’s team asked graphic designers Lizz Luce and Mitch Monson to create a distinctive symbol. The brief called for a fusion of the astrological signs associated with Mars and Venus. Monson recalled that Prince wanted the design to carry feminine qualities as well as masculine ones. The designers worked through the night, and Prince quickly selected the version that became familiar.
Monson later described how little the chosen design changed: “The one you see now was almost untouched. We did very little adjustment to that particular mark at all,” he said. Its irregularity was intentional, too: “But it was supposed to be that way; he didn’t want it to be perfect.”
A separate first-person account by a 3D artist describes a rushed video-production assignment in April 1992, when the graphic was being brought into its final form. That account complements the designers’ story; it does not establish that one artist originated the entire concept.

What the symbol means—and what is interpretation
The clearest documented explanation is the combination of Mars and Venus imagery and a deliberate blend of masculine and feminine qualities. The symbol can also look like a cross, and observers have read it as bringing sexuality and religion together. Those are interpretations of its visual associations, not a definitive statement of Prince’s intent.
The 1992 album came before the 1993 name change
The Love Symbol was associated with Prince’s 1992 album, often informally called the “Love Symbol album.” That release and his later decision to use the glyph as his name are separate milestones. Keeping them distinct helps explain why accounts of the symbol’s origin sometimes seem to place it at different points in his career.

Why Prince became the symbol
On June 7, 1993—his 35th birthday—Prince announced that he would be known by the symbol. The change took place amid his conflict with Warner Bros. over control and the release of his music. In a 1999 interview with Larry King, Prince offered a personal explanation: “I wanted to move to a new plateau in my life and one of the ways in which I did that was to change my name, to sort of divorce me from the past.”
His then-attorney, Londell McMillan, later recalled that Prince thought changing his name might void his Warner Bros. contract. McMillan said it did not work legally, so the name change should not be treated as a successful way to escape the agreement.

When Prince returned to his name
Prince resumed using his name in 2000, after his Warner Bros. contract expired. The sequence is straightforward: the design emerged in 1992, the symbol was associated with that year’s album, he adopted it as his stage name in 1993, and he returned to using Prince in 2000.
