In a first-person account published by Scroll.in on July 21, 2020, he described the press’s three-month halt in sales after Covid-19 hit and a plan to publish no more than six books that year, down from its usual 10 to 12. Those figures and plans describe the situation as Divate reported it in 2020, not the publisher’s current policy.
From Marathi poetry magazines to a dedicated press
Hemant Divate traces his attraction to poetry to hearing Sanskrit devotional poems read aloud and explained in Marathi. He began writing in Marathi in 1984. In 1992, he launched Abidha, a Marathi poetry magazine that ran until 1998; he later started Abhidhanantar, which ran from 1999 to 2008.
The move into book publishing grew from a practical frustration. Divate was dissatisfied with the paper and cover design of his 2001 poetry collection, and he and his wife, Smruti, decided to publish poetry on their own terms. They began Abhidhanantar in 2002. The English-language imprint Poetrywala followed in 2003 with Virus Alert, Divate’s poems translated by Dilip Chitre. Paperwall’s official history also dates Poetrywala’s launch to 2003. Paperwall’s About page describes the company as co-founded by Hemant and Smruti Divate, with Poetrywala as its poetry imprint.
Divate said the magazine’s community helped the press find readers: after Abhidhanantar closed, he estimated that its roughly 1,000 subscribers transferred their loyalty to Poetrywala. That is his account of the magazine’s readership at the time, not a measure of the imprint’s current audience. He summed up the ambition this way: “Publishing poetry is a movement. We want the poetry circle to grow.”

Why the press used small print runs
For a small poetry publisher, printing hundreds of copies at once can leave money tied up in books and create a storage problem. Divate said the press had used digital printing exclusively since 2009, allowing it to print smaller batches and reorder as stock ran low rather than keep a large inventory on hand.
In his 2020 account, Divate said the press generally reordered when its inventory approached 10 copies, and that 300 to 500 copies was often a sufficient run for a poetry collection in India’s still-developing poetry-reading market. These are figures from his experience of running Paperwall, not independently measured industry standards. He said the company was funded from personal earnings, with proceeds from book sales reinvested in future titles.

What the Covid-19 shock changed in 2020
Divate reported that Paperwall had not sold a single book for three months after the Covid-19 crisis hit. Sales had resumed by the time he spoke to Scroll.in in July 2020, from within India and overseas, but he expected demand to remain affected for four to five years. That was his forecast at the time; the account does not establish how the recovery ultimately unfolded.
The disruption led him to plan a smaller list for that year. Against a normal annual output of 10 to 12 books, he said Poetrywala would publish no more than six in 2020 and had paused new submissions. He also proposed a Poetrywala Foundation to support the imprint through crowdfunding and individual donations. The 2020 account records these as plans, not confirmed outcomes.

Divate argued then for keeping the list in print rather than shifting it to ebooks, saying he believed deep reading required a physical book and that the imprint’s loyal readers might not adopt digital editions. That was his editorial position in 2020, not evidence about all poetry readers or a statement of the publisher’s current format policy.

Scroll.in’s July 2020 account said Poetrywala had published more than 200 poetry collections. Paperwall’s current Hemant Divate profile says the imprint has published more than 150 poetry collections. The figures come from different sources and contexts, and the reason for the difference is not established; neither should be silently treated as a reconciled current total.
