Those are estimates of his chronological age—not necessarily how old he looks. Death, time spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and a wish that turns him into a child complicate the count, so no single age describes an entire series.
Goku’s age by series at a glance
The figures below are approximate timeline estimates from a fan-maintained age compilation, not ages stated as exact facts in the official series descriptions. For series spanning multiple years, the range reflects changes across the story rather than one age that applies throughout.
| Series | Approximate chronological age | What affects his appearance or the count? |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball | About 12 at the start; about 18 by the final tournament-era events | He appears as a child at the beginning. |
| Dragon Ball Z | About 24 at the Raditz-era opening; estimates reach the low 40s by the Buu period | Death and time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber complicate physical-age calculations. |
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | Same approximate in-story landmarks as Z | Kai retells the Z storyline; its broadcast date does not reset Goku’s age. |
| Dragon Ball Super | Roughly 45–51 across the arcs | The story spans years, and time-chamber use affects physical-age estimates. |
| Dragon Ball DAIMA | Roughly 43 in the cited compilation’s chronology placement | The plot turns Goku and others small; that appearance is not his chronological age. |
| Dragon Ball GT | Roughly 57 at the start, on the commonly used Age 789 timeline | A wish turns his body into a child without rewinding his chronological life. |
How old is Goku in Dragon Ball?
Goku is commonly estimated to be about 12 when he meets Bulma and sets out on the original Dragon Ball quest. By the final tournament-era events, timeline compilations put him at about 18. Toei’s series description presents him as an innocent boy beginning the Dragon Ball adventure, but does not give either age. The figures are timeline calculations, not exact ages announced in the show.
How old is Goku in Dragon Ball Z?
At the Raditz-era opening of Z, Goku is estimated to be about 24 chronologically. By the Buu period, common timeline calculations put him in his early 40s. It is misleading to give one number for all of Z: the story advances over time, and Goku’s death and training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber make his physical age harder to state consistently. Estimates that count time spent in the chamber can produce higher physical-age totals, depending on the counting convention.

How old is Goku in Dragon Ball Z Kai?
Kai retells and remasters the Z storyline, so Goku’s approximate in-story age landmarks are the same: about 24 at the opening and older by the later arcs. Its release or broadcast date belongs to the real-world history of the series, not Goku’s fictional timeline.
How old is Goku in Dragon Ball Super?
Goku is estimated to be roughly 45 to 51 across Super’s arcs. The range matters because the series covers multiple years; it should not be flattened into one age for every episode. Toei places the series’ opening after the Buu threat, while the detailed ages come from secondary timeline estimates. Time-chamber training also means physical-age figures may differ from chronological ones.
How old is Goku in Dragon Ball DAIMA?
A cited timeline compilation places DAIMA at roughly age 43 chronologically. That number is approximate, and Goku’s small appearance in the series is a plot change, not evidence that his life has been rewound. Toei’s catalog confirms the shrinking premise but does not state an age. The available official chronology and catalog descriptions do not, on their own, settle how DAIMA should be reconciled with every other series’ timeline.
How old is Goku in Dragon Ball GT?
Goku is estimated to be roughly 57 chronologically at the beginning of GT, using the commonly cited Age 789 timeline. Toei’s catalog says that another set of Dragon Balls turns him into a child. The age figure is a timeline calculation, not an age given in that catalog. A secondary timeline reference reports that GT Perfect File Vol. 1 places relevant GT events through Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 transformation in Age 789.

Why is Goku a kid again in GT?
In GT, a wish made with another set of Dragon Balls turns Goku’s body into a child. That changes how old he looks, not how many years have passed since his birth. So “Goku is a kid again” describes his body and appearance; it does not mean his chronological age has reset to childhood.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do Goku’s age estimates differ?
Chronological age and physical age count different things
Chronological age means years elapsed in the fictional timeline. Physical age refers to his body or apparent age, which can diverge because of death, time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, or a transformation such as the GT wish. Any physical-age number needs to specify what time is counted and how.
The detailed numbers are estimates, not official series statements
The Dragon Ball Official Site’s chronology lists real-world broadcast milestones—for example, the original series began airing in 1986, Z in 1989, GT in 1996, Super in 2015, and DAIMA in 2024. Those dates do not tell you Goku’s age in the story. Secondary timeline work commonly places his birth in Age 737 based on supplementary guidebooks, but later chronology material creates conflicts, so calculations based on that birth year should be attributed and treated as approximate.
Keep GT distinct when comparing timelines
The cited official chronology and catalog list the series but do not provide an explicit ruling that resolves GT’s continuity in relation to the Super/DAIMA timeline. For age comparisons, treat GT separately rather than assuming that every series belongs to one continuous sequence.
