How often should I get a haircut? It depends on the shape you want to maintain, your hair’s condition and how much length you want to keep. Stylist recommendations range from roughly every four to six weeks for short, precise cuts to every eight to 12 weeks for many long styles; some stylists advise even less frequent trims for healthy, thick or curly hair. These are practical rules of thumb, not medical requirements.
Choose an interval based on the cut you want to maintain
Short, defined shapes show growth sooner: a few weeks can change a pixie’s outline, bob’s neckline or tailored layers. Longer hair can often go longer between appointments, particularly when the ends remain healthy and you are not trying to preserve a sharply defined shape.
| Hair or cut situation | Stylist guidance | What the appointment helps maintain |
|---|---|---|
| Pixie, short bob or precise, structured cut | About every 4–6 weeks, according to stylists interviewed by Vogue. Hair.com stylist Pepper Pastor suggests about six weeks for short, fine, shaggy or tailored layered cuts. | Outline, neckline, layers and silhouette. |
| Medium-length hair | About every 6–12 weeks in Vogue’s stylist guidance; one stylist suggests 6–8 weeks for fine, medium-length hair. | End condition and the desired shape. |
| Long hair | About every 8–12 weeks if prone to split ends or flyaways; stylist Rodney Cutler recommends 10–12 weeks for healthy, strong hair. Hair.com notes that some long hair can go longer. | Keeping ends in good condition without removing length unnecessarily. |
| Thick, curly or long hair | Hair.com stylist Pepper Pastor suggests about twice a year for thick, curly or long hair. Vogue stylist T. Cooper recommends 6–8 weeks for curly, coily or textured hair. | Depends on curl shape, dryness, shrinkage and length goals. |
| Growing out chemically treated hair to reveal natural texture | Celebrity hairstylist Irinel de León recommends frequent trims, about every four weeks. | Gradually removing chemically treated or damaged ends as natural texture grows in. |
| Damaged or heavily processed hair | Review the ends more often; severe damage may call for a larger cut rather than repeated tiny trims. | Removing as much damage as you are comfortable with, then reassessing. |
| Growing length and only tidying damaged tips | Ask about a “dusting.” Hair.com describes this as roughly a quarter inch. | Removing a small amount from the tips; a dusting does not refresh the haircut’s shape. |
The difference in advice for curly and thick hair reflects different goals, not a single rule that fits everyone. A shorter interval may help maintain a particular curl shape or address brittle ends; a longer interval may suit healthy hair when retaining length matters most. Discuss both your preferred outline and your ends’ condition with your stylist.
Adjust the schedule when your hair shows signs of damage or a lost shape
Consider booking sooner if you notice split ends, breakage, dry or flyaway ends, frequent tangling, or a cut that looks limp and no longer holds its style. These signs are reasons to reassess, not a fixed timetable. Bleach or repeated heat styling can cause more substantial damage; depending on its extent, a small trim may not remove all of it.

Tell your stylist whether you want shape maintenance or only a light dusting, and specify how much length you are willing to lose. That helps avoid treating every visit as a full haircut when your priority is simply tidying the ends.
Trimming does not make hair grow faster
Hair grows from the scalp, so cutting the ends does not increase its growth rate at the root. Pepper Pastor estimates average growth at about one-quarter to one-half inch per month; that is her estimate, not a universal clinical statistic. A trim can remove split or damaged ends that might otherwise break, helping preserve visible length, but it cannot speed growth.

Products may temporarily make split ends look smoother or easier to manage, but they do not permanently repair a split. As Vogue stylist T. Cooper puts it, “There is no magic potion that will reverse split ends.” Cutting off the split is the definitive way to remove it. Hair.com discusses bonding treatments, masks and leave-in conditioners as ways to manage hair between appointments; its recommendations and product claims are brand-owned editorial from L’Oréal Professional Products Division, not independent clinical evidence.

- For a short cut: Ask how often the outline or neckline needs refreshing to keep the shape you want.
- For length retention: Explain that you want to keep as much length as possible, and ask whether a dusting is enough.
- For damaged ends: Ask what can be removed in one visit and whether a larger cut is needed to remove the damage you can see.
- For curls or coils: Describe whether your priority is curl shape, reducing brittle ends or keeping length; those goals can lead to different schedules.
If you are considering trimming your own bangs between visits, Vogue notes that professional shears differ from common scissors and cautions against DIY major trims. A tool alone does not make a substantial at-home haircut equivalent to a salon cut.
