What is Home Shanti about?
Directed by Akanksha Dua, the 2022 Indian series follows the Joshis, a middle-class family in Dehradun. Sarla Joshi, an English teacher and vice principal nearing retirement, and her husband Umesh need a home of their own before Sarla has to leave her government quarters. Their children, Jigyasa and Naman, bring different priorities to the project.

The house gives the family’s disagreements a concrete shape. A study, a private gym and a private washroom all compete for space in the floor plan, while later complications include suspicion about a contractor, a construction permit and a build that goes over budget. Critics describe the series as light and approachable. In her 6 May 2022 review for Scroll.in, Udita Jhunjhunwala calls its tone “light, optimistic and heart-warming.” The Indian Express’s 7 May 2022 review likewise characterizes it as relatable and mildly amusing, while describing it as a gentler, less forceful relative of Gullak.

The construction project offers a natural source of episode-to-episode conflict: family members have to negotiate what the house should contain, then contend with practical setbacks as the build progresses. The competing room requests make the family’s differing needs easy to understand, while the contractor, permit and budget complications add pressure beyond the floor plan.
