NVIDIA supplies important graphics, networking and timing components for the Las Vegas Sphere, but it does not run the visual system alone. The venue combines NVIDIA hardware and software with Sphere Studios’ content work, Hitachi Vantara storage, 7thSense media servers and pixel processors, and a high-bandwidth video network. Together, those systems make the Sphere’s interior and exterior displays behave like coordinated canvases rather than a collection of unrelated panels.

Two displays, two very different canvases

The interior screen

The Sphere’s interior display is a curved LED plane of roughly 160,000 square feet, reaching about 240 feet high and wrapping above and around the audience. Sphere Entertainment describes it as a 16K × 16K display. Its scale and shape are intended to fill a viewer’s field of vision, not to behave like a conventional rectangular cinema screen. Sphere Entertainment’s SEC filing and 7thSense’s description of the display provide those dimensions.

The Exosphere

Outside, the Exosphere covers nearly 580,000 square feet and uses about 1.2 million programmable LED pucks, according to the SEC filing. It is a curved, addressable exterior canvas for artworks, announcements and branded campaigns—not simply a standard monitor enlarged to building size. Its content has to be designed and mapped for the building’s form.

These headline dimensions describe different display systems. They do not mean every physical LED emitter is always treated as a unique pixel in one ordinary video file.

What NVIDIA contributes

NVIDIA says around 150 RTX A6000 GPUs in rack-mounted workstations support Sphere’s visuals. The company says the GPUs can support three layers of 16K resolution at 60 frames per second. That is a vendor description of the system’s capability, not a published rack-by-rack diagram or a map showing which GPU drives each portion of the display. NVIDIA’s Sphere overview does not disclose that level of detail.

The RTX A6000 is a professional workstation GPU, based on NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture. Its product specifications include 48 GB of ECC GDDR6 memory, a maximum board power of 300 watts, and four DisplayPort 1.4a outputs. Those specifications help explain the class of hardware involved, but they are not a statement of Sphere’s total power draw or proof that each card directly feeds a display segment. NVIDIA’s RTX A6000 specifications provide the product details.

At Sphere, GPUs are part of a distributed graphics and media pipeline. The task is not just to draw a large image: playback may involve multiple high-resolution layers, live sources, real-time composition and a nonstandard curved geometry, while many systems must present frames in coordination. NVIDIA’s role is to accelerate graphics and data movement within that larger arrangement.

How NVIDIA’s networking and timing components fit

Rivermax: moving media data

NVIDIA describes Rivermax as software for high-performance media streaming over networks. For Sphere, NVIDIA says it enables direct media-data transfers to and from GPUs and helps reduce latency and jitter. It is best understood as a transport and streaming acceleration layer—not a creative editing application, a media player, a media server or a display controller. NVIDIA’s Rivermax documentation and its Sphere overview describe its place in the stack.

BlueField DPUs and ConnectX-6 Dx adapters

NVIDIA identifies BlueField data-processing units and ConnectX-6 Dx network adapters as components of the Sphere infrastructure. A DPU can offload networking, storage and other infrastructure work from a host CPU; a network adapter provides the machine’s high-speed connection and may accelerate data-transfer tasks. In this setting, these are infrastructure components supporting data movement and networking—not tools that create the show’s artwork. See NVIDIA’s pages for BlueField DPUs and ConnectX Ethernet adapters.

DOCA Firefly: keeping clocks aligned

When many playback and display systems work together, their timing must stay aligned. NVIDIA says its DOCA Firefly Service synchronizes network clocks with sub-microsecond accuracy at Sphere. Clock alignment helps systems present frames together; it does not itself correct content mapping, color differences or every possible playback fault. Those also depend on configuration and the other processing systems. NVIDIA’s description is the source for the timing claim.

What Hitachi Vantara and 7thSense do

The system’s division of labor is clearer when the suppliers are separated by function:

Company or system Role in the pipeline What is publicly described
Sphere Studios Content development and production In-house creative and production services, with a Burbank facility and Big Dome development environment.
Hitachi Vantara Shared storage and data delivery Storage infrastructure that streams high-resolution content to 7thSense media servers.
7thSense Media serving, pixel processing and show control Actor media servers, Juggler pixel processors and Conjurer generative-media technology; distribution over an ST 2110 network.
NVIDIA Graphics acceleration, media transport and timing infrastructure RTX A6000 GPUs, Rivermax, BlueField DPUs, ConnectX-6 Dx adapters and DOCA Firefly are identified in NVIDIA’s public account.

Hitachi Vantara: feeding the playback system

Hitachi Vantara’s March 7, 2024 announcement describes 27 storage nodes and 4 petabytes of flash storage. For the cited Postcard from Earth workflow, Hitachi reported more than 400 GB per second of throughput and latency below 5 milliseconds; it also described 12-bit color and 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. The company says its Hitachi Content Software for File system streams content in real time to 7thSense media servers. These are Hitachi’s claims about the described system and workflow, not independently audited measurements for every show or content path. Hitachi Vantara and Sphere Entertainment’s announcement gives the figures and context.

7thSense: serving and processing the pictures

7thSense describes a system that includes Actor media servers, Juggler pixel processors and Conjurer generative-media tools. Its announcement says dozens of media servers output 4K video at 60 frames per second over an SMPTE ST 2110 IP video network. Pixel processors can combine playback media with live sources such as cameras. The vendor also describes the installation as redundant and mission-critical. Sphere Entertainment and 7thSense’s partnership announcement outlines these functions.

This distributed arrangement is why “NVIDIA runs the Sphere” is misleading. NVIDIA supplies acceleration and networking components, while 7thSense provides much of the venue-specific serving and pixel-processing layer, and Hitachi supplies storage infrastructure. Public descriptions do not show a complete signal-flow diagram linking every GPU, server and display segment.

How content moves from production to the displays

Sphere Studios provides in-house creative and production services. Sphere Entertainment’s SEC filing describes its Burbank campus as including a 68,000-square-foot development facility and Big Dome, a 28,000-square-foot, 100-foot-high geodesic dome with a quarter-scale version of the Las Vegas interior display plane. It serves as a specialized environment for screening, production and testing. The filing describes the facility.

The broad content journey is a production and playback pipeline, not a single render button:

  1. Create or capture: Sphere Studios and other content creators develop immersive material, which may include captured footage, designed imagery, live sources or generative elements.
  2. Format and test: Content is prepared for the Sphere’s unusual geometry and can be evaluated in development environments such as Big Dome.
  3. Transfer and store: Digital content is moved to Las Vegas and held on high-performance storage. Hitachi says its system streams content to 7thSense servers.
  4. Serve and process: Media servers play content; pixel processors map and combine sources for the display system. NVIDIA components accelerate graphics work, data movement and timing functions within the broader system.
  5. Distribute and synchronize: 7thSense describes playback over SMPTE ST 2110. Networked systems need coordinated clocks and correctly configured playback so the canvas appears unified.
  6. Present: The final output is shown on the interior display, the Exosphere, or both, depending on the production.

The public material establishes this broad flow, but not a universal file format, creative-software package or identical pipeline for every show. Specific productions may differ.

Why a Sphere-scale system is difficult to operate

Pixels are only part of the workload

A 16K-class canvas, high frame rates and simultaneous visual layers create substantial demands on storage, network capacity, GPU memory and processing. Live feeds and real-time composition add variables that a fully pre-rendered sequence does not have. The curved display also requires appropriate mapping: conventional 16:9 footage cannot simply be assumed to fit the venue as-is.

Distributed playback trades a bottleneck for coordination work

Partitioning playback among many servers avoids relying on one machine to produce the whole canvas, but it creates coordination requirements: timing, network behavior, mapping, monitoring and redundancy all matter. 7thSense’s description of dozens of 4K/60 servers over ST 2110 illustrates how the display can be served as a set of synchronized outputs rather than one enormous direct GPU output.

Pre-rendered and generative content have different risks

Pre-rendered media can be reviewed and tested ahead of a show, making its playback more predictable. Generative or live content can respond to performers, cameras or other inputs, but creates more real-time dependencies. 7thSense says its system supports both full-resolution uncompressed media and generative content; that does not mean all Sphere content is generated live. 7thSense’s system description covers both capabilities.

  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Typical failure points

  • Clock drift: separate systems present frames at slightly different times, producing discontinuities across segments.
  • Network congestion or packet loss: data arrives late or fails to arrive, disrupting a stream.
  • Storage bottlenecks: assets cannot be read fast enough for the intended playback rate.
  • GPU memory pressure: high-resolution assets and layers exceed available working memory.
  • Mapping or color errors: an image may be stretched, misplaced or visibly inconsistent across processing paths.
  • Live-source mismatch: a camera feed and pre-rendered imagery may not align in timing or composition.
  • Hardware, thermal or power limits: sustained rack workloads place demands on equipment and facility infrastructure.

These are engineering risks inherent in complex distributed media systems, not a list of reported Sphere incidents. Public sources do not disclose the venue’s complete redundancy topology, recovery-time targets, power consumption, cooling design or detailed failure history.

What NVIDIA’s role does—and does not—mean

The Sphere’s visual spectacle is not established as an “AI effect.” The public descriptions cited here emphasize professional GPU graphics, high-speed media transport, network processing, storage, playback and synchronization. They do not establish that generative AI is responsible for the headline visuals, nor that NVIDIA Omniverse is the venue’s production system.

Nor does the figure of around 150 GPUs mean that each GPU directly drives a fixed set of pixels. NVIDIA has not published the complete GPU allocation, exact server models or a full signal-flow map. Its public claim is that those GPUs support the visual system and can deliver three layers of 16K at 60 frames per second.

The clearest explanation is a chain of specialized jobs: creators make and prepare the content; storage supplies it; media servers and pixel processors distribute and compose it; NVIDIA hardware and software accelerate parts of the computing and networking workload; and synchronized networked outputs feed the display systems.

Sources and limits of the public detail

The technical figures above come from statements by NVIDIA, Sphere Entertainment, Hitachi Vantara and 7thSense, rather than an independently published full engineering specification. The public descriptions identify key components and selected performance claims, but do not disclose the entire topology, every show’s configuration or the venue’s recovery procedures. That is why vendor-specific claims are attributed to the company that published them.
