Nina Jacobson’s path to Hollywood influence ran through both sides of film development: first as a studio executive overseeing scripts and production, then as an independent producer building projects through Color Force. Her credits span major adaptations such as The Hunger Games and Crazy Rich Asians, as well as acclaimed television including American Crime Story and Pose.
She learned the studio system before becoming a producer
Jacobson began her career at Disney Sunday Movie and went on to work at Silver Pictures, Parkes/MacDonald Productions, Universal, and DreamWorks. FX’s biographies describe her as a senior film executive at DreamWorks before her Disney leadership role.
In 2006, Jacobson became president of Walt Disney Motion Picture Group. Stanford Graduate School of Business says she was responsible for script development and film production across Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures. That job placed her at the point where projects were developed and production decisions were overseen—experience distinct from producing individual films independently.
Color Force gave her a platform beyond a studio
After Disney, Jacobson founded Color Force, the production company she operates with producing partner Brad Simpson. The Los Angeles Times described the pair as Color Force’s owners and operators in a 2018 profile. FX biographies disagree on the company’s founding year, so a precise year is not established by those sources.

Jacobson’s move from studio leadership to a production company changed the scale and shape of her work: rather than overseeing a studio’s slate across multiple labels, she could help develop and produce specific projects across film and television. Her credits show both franchise filmmaking and stories that do not fit that mold.
Adaptations became a signature part of her film work
Color Force’s best-known film work includes The Hunger Games, adapted from Suzanne Collins’ novels, and Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kevin Kwan’s novel. Jacobson told the Los Angeles Times in 2018, “I’ve never adapted a book I didn’t love.” The comment captures one element of her approach: choosing source material she feels strongly about, not simply pursuing adaptations as a category.

What made her a Hollywood force
Jacobson’s rise was not a single leap from executive to celebrity producer. She built experience in development and production at several companies, held senior responsibility at Disney, and then used Color Force to produce projects across formats. The resulting credits—commercial franchises, literary adaptations, and television series—are the clearest evidence of her influence.
FX’s biographies attach substantial worldwide-gross figures to The Hunger Games and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, while her other work demonstrates a broader creative range. Taken together, those achievements explain why Jacobson is regarded as one of Hollywood’s prominent producers.
