Nicholas Sparks says he began writing fiction while recovering from a track injury at the University of Notre Dame. The first novel he wrote was never published; a class a few years later helped him see how a story’s voice could shape it, prompting a second unpublished novel and, eventually, the path toward The Notebook.
How a freshman-year injury gave Sparks time to write
Sparks attended Notre Dame on a track and field scholarship. During his freshman year, he was injured, and while recovering over the summer he wrote his first novel. He described it to Lizz Schumer in a PEOPLE interview published October 5, 2024: “While convalescing over summer after my freshman year at Notre Dame, I wrote my first novel, albeit one that was unpublished.”
That distinction matters: this was a first attempt, not a debut book released to readers. Sparks’s account presents the injury as the circumstance that gave him time to write, not as a single event that guaranteed a career.
How a class on voice led to a second novel
A few years later, a class introduced Sparks to what he called the “power of voice” in fiction. He said that discovery led him to write a second novel, which also remained unpublished. He drew inspiration from The Catcher in the Rye, Slaughterhouse-Five, Catch-22 and Invisible Man.

Looking back, Sparks said that without Notre Dame, the injury, the writing and the class, he probably would never have written The Notebook. His account describes a sequence of experiences and continued work, rather than a neat leap from one injury to instant success.
What Sparks says about developing a story
Sparks says he spends considerable time thinking about a story before drafting. He described an “originality test”: if he recognizes that an idea has already been used in a movie, he rejects it. He also said that writing a book takes him about six months, including working out the main beats and characters, drafting and correcting wrong turns. These are his descriptions of his own process, not a rule for every writer.

Why Counting Miracles was the occasion for the interview
The PEOPLE interview appeared as Counting Miracles was Sparks’s latest book. It reported that the novel had just reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list and that Amazon MGM Studios was adapting it as a film starring Alan Ritchson. Those are publication-time details from October 2024; they do not establish the book’s current chart position or the adaptation’s current status.
The interview also discussed how screen and stage versions can introduce his stories to audiences through other media, naming The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and Nights in Rodanthe. Sparks said his hope is that people enjoy his stories and, ideally, recommend them to someone else.
