Nicholas Cartwright’s route to television ran through six years in the Australian Army, earlier work as a rock-and-blues singer, and drama training at NIDA. When he joined Home and Away as Senior Constable Cash Newman, he said his understanding of military rank helped him approach the role—but it was one part of a less conventional path into acting.
From Army rifleman to television newcomer
In an interview published by PerthNow on 11 June 2021, Cartwright said he had served for six years in the Australian Army as a rifleman, including deployments in East Timor and Afghanistan. The newspaper reported he was 33 at the time.

That service was not described as a direct preparation for an acting career. Cartwright said he had first worked as a singer in a rock-and-blues band and called the Army “the anomaly” in his path. After leaving the defence force, he chose to study acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
Why he saw a connection between military service and Cash Newman
Cartwright’s 2021 role on Seven’s Home and Away was Senior Constable Cash Newman. He told PerthNow: “I think it really helps having a military background and understanding of rank and things like that to go into a position like this,” referring to playing a police officer.

That was Cartwright’s own perspective on the part: familiarity with hierarchy gave him a point of reference for portraying a character in a rank-based profession. It does not mean military service is the same as police work, or that it substitutes for acting experience.
A deliberately unexpected move to NIDA
Cartwright described the transition out of military life as disorienting: “You can kind of feel a little lost when you get out of the defence force, and no one wants to do a normal job,” he said. He framed his next move as a leap rather than an obvious career step: “So I thought, what’s the craziest thing I can do and decided to go to NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art).”
The interview also noted that he met fellow Home and Away cast member Ethan Browne at NIDA. In Cartwright’s account, acting came after music and military service—not as a career plan that had been steadily building throughout his Army years.

PerthNow described Cartwright as having “zero television experience” before the role. The article’s account of his first storyline was specific to the show in 2021: Cash arrested Justin Morgan, and a body later washed up, unsettling the community. Those details explain the original casting context; they should not be read as a current summary of Home and Away or Cartwright’s present career status.
