Thing in Netflix’s Wednesday was not a fully animatronic hand. He was primarily performed by actor and close-up magician Victor Dorobantu, whose body was concealed on set and removed in visual effects. Replacement hands, silicone casts, motion capture and 3D animation helped with shots that could not be staged practically.
Thing was performed by a real actor, not a full-time puppet
Director Tim Burton wanted Thing to come from an actor’s performance, according to visual effects supervisor Tom Turnbull. Turnbull said computer-generated Thing was part of the plan, but a fallback “only when pretty much everything else failed.” The production’s basic approach was therefore a live hand performance enhanced by effects, not a fully animatronic character.
Turnbull later summarized the principle this way: “The basic technique behind Thing is exactly the same as the 90’s movies.” The reference was to the older tradition of making a disembodied hand seem present through practical performance and carefully planned staging, with digital work used where needed. How Victor Dorobantu performed Thing on set
A concealed performer in a blue suit
Dorobantu wore a blue chroma-key suit assembled from different pieces for the day’s shooting, then had scene-specific prosthetic makeup applied. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes transcript says the prosthetic process took almost three hours. The blue suit gave visual-effects artists a surface they could remove, but the crew still had to plan where Dorobantu could fit and how to keep his body and its shadows from giving away the illusion.

Some scenes required physical changes to the set so Dorobantu could work below or behind it. He described crew members cutting a hole or raising a floor to hide him while positioning his hand where the scene required it. (Netflix Tudum, September 24, 2024; Casting Networks)
Clean plates and reference photography
After filming with Dorobantu, the crew could record the scene again without him, matching the camera movement and lighting. That clean background plate gave visual-effects artists a version of the set to use when removing his body while retaining the hand. The team also photographed the environment and captured lighting and color references, including a chroma ball and color chart.

This was not a simple matter of deleting everything blue. The hand had to remain integrated with the scene, and shadows cast by the concealed performer could reveal a body that was no longer visible. Turnbull described the task as “painting out 90% of the human being that’s dominating the shot and keeping the 10% that’s the hand.” That is his description of the work, not a measured statistic for every shot in the series. (Netflix Tudum, September 24, 2024; Casting Networks)
What replaced the live performance in harder shots
The production had several alternatives for moments when Dorobantu could not safely or effectively perform in the required position. These methods complemented the live performance rather than making the character fully animatronic.

| Method | What it was used for |
|---|---|
| Replacement hands | Hand props in different positions could stand in for Dorobantu in setups when he was not present, Jenna Ortega said. |
| Motion capture and hand sensors | Dorobantu said some especially complicated movements were performed in a studio using motion capture and hand-specific sensors. |
| Silicone casts with armatures | Realistic hand casts with internal armatures provided a physical option for shots requiring a fixed or controlled hand position. |
| Stunt doubles | Doubles were used for dangerous stunts. |
| 3D animation | When a workable on-set solution was not possible, the team could replace the performer digitally, aiming to reproduce Dorobantu’s performance faithfully. |
Ortega also described a suitcase of replacement hands in different poses and reference photographs taken between setups. Turnbull said practical performance remained the default; digital replacement was reserved for shots that could not be achieved successfully on set. Why combine practical acting and visual effects?
Dorobantu’s hand supplied the character’s movement and expressive timing. Practical staging let the cast and crew respond to a performance on set, while props, casts, motion capture, doubles and 3D animation covered specific limitations of a shot. The trade-off was substantial visual-effects work: artists had to remove the concealed performer and manage details such as lighting and shadows without losing the hand’s connection to the scene.

That blend is the useful distinction behind the “animatronic” description. Thing could appear in shots using physical stand-ins or digitally created movement, but the production accounts describe an actor-led approach with selective substitutes—not a single fully animatronic version used throughout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could a blue chroma-key suit recreate the effect?
A blue chroma-key suit can help isolate a performer in a basic filmmaking setup, but it is only one ingredient. Wednesday also relied on Dorobantu’s hand performance, custom prosthetics, staging designed around his body, matched clean plates, lighting references, shadow control and visual-effects work. The production sources do not identify a retail brand or model for his suit, so a generic suit should not be mistaken for the custom production process.
