Navayana began in 2003 when S. Anand and Ravikumar decided to publish writing on caste beyond the narrow range of Dalit life narratives they felt publishers were emphasizing. Their first list comprised four short books. Today, Navayana describes itself as an independent English-language publisher of anti-caste writing, with a catalogue spanning critical editions, theory, literature, memoir and more. Its current pages show an active catalogue and public voice, though they do not set out a definitive future strategy.
Why Navayana was started
In a first-person account published by Scroll.in on 9 July 2020, co-founder and publisher S. Anand traced Navayana’s beginnings to his 2003 reporting for Outlook on Dalit literature. He says Ravikumar was concerned that publishers were overemphasizing Dalit life narratives. They chose to start a publishing house and bring out four titles rather than publish just one.
Anand says he and Ravikumar founded Navayana on 5 November 2003, while Anand was living in Pondicherry and Ravikumar in Chennai. They launched four books at the Landmark bookstore in Spencer Plaza. The first was a reissue of B.R. Ambedkar’s “Waiting for a Visa,” published as Ambedkar: Autobiographical Notes with an introduction by Ravikumar.
According to Anand’s 2020 recollection, the launch titles ran from 40 to 80 pages, cost Rs 40 to Rs 60 each, and had an initial print run of 600 copies apiece. These are figures he reported about the 2003 launch, not independently audited records.

What Navayana publishes
Navayana’s About page describes it as a pioneering independent English-language publisher of anti-caste writing, founded in 2003. The publisher says its name draws on B.R. Ambedkar’s anti-metaphysical interpretation of Buddhism. It also explains that its logo’s kissing buffaloes refer to an episode in Aravind Malagatti’s Kannada autobiography Government Brahmana.
The publisher describes a list grounded in emancipatory traditions and spanning critical annotated editions of Ambedkar, theory, poetry, theatre, fiction, translations, memoirs, biographies and graphic books. Examples in its catalogue include Annihilation of Caste: The Annotated Critical Edition, Buddhism in India, The Vulgarity of Caste and The Caste Con Census.

Choosing between a focused edition and a wider collection
For a reader who wants to study one central Ambedkar work, Annihilation of Caste: The Annotated Critical Edition is a focused option. The catalogue also describes the Navayana Library Box-Set as containing all 65 Navayana titles, making it a broader collection. Catalogue listings can change, so check the publisher’s site for current availability and pricing.
The practical pressures Anand described
Anand’s 2020 account presents the early operation as deliberately low-overhead: printing and shipping were major expenses, and his desktop computer served as the office. He recalled distributors seeking discounts of 40 to 45 percent. He also described a mainstream distributor engaging with the 2014 annotated Annihilation of Caste, while trade distribution remained difficult for books perceived as slow-moving or focused on caste and Dalit subjects. These are his recollections of Navayana’s particular experiences, not a survey of Indian publishing.

He contrasted the attention received by an Ambedkar book introduced by Arundhati Roy with the more limited attention given to titles such as N.D. Rajkumar’s poetry and Bhagwan Das’s memoir. In his telling, the challenge was not only to publish a range of anti-caste writing, but also to make that range visible. These examples describe the distribution experiences he recounted in 2020; they do not establish current sales or audience figures.

The number is a snapshot of the catalogue’s presentation, which may change. Its official blog index displays dated posts through 2026 about books and public activity. Together, these pages indicate that the publisher continues to maintain a catalogue and communicate publicly; they do not provide a full account of its current finances, sales or operations.

One clear statement of direction came in a 15 May 2024 anniversary post. Marking twenty years, Navayana announced ten EverBlue titles as works to be remembered, restored, reclaimed and renewed. The publisher included works associated with Ambedkar, Bhagwan Das, Gail Omvedt, Namdeo Nimgade, N.D. Rajkumar and others. It recalled that it had published “a hundred titles. Maybe a few less or more” over two decades; that is the publisher’s approximate recollection, not a verified catalogue count. The post offered twenty sets exclusively through its site for Rs 3,499 against Rs 4,090 at that time. Those were historical 2024 offer terms, not current prices or availability.
In the 2020 Scroll.in account, Anand wrote: “I see the need to groom an inclusive, anti-caste team of dedicated editors and publishers, rights managers, and salespersons, let them redefine Navayana for our times, and take it into the future.” That is an aspiration he expressed then, not evidence of its present implementation. The available current pages show ongoing publishing activity, but do not spell out a definitive strategic plan.
